We have a softener with kitchen cold and outside taps hard. I installed a whole house reverse osmosis drinking water system and we really like it. The RO system uses soft water. The ice cubes are clear with the RO water. With hard water they were milky looking.
I use bag salt as course as I can get. A friend uses a cow lick block and says it works fine. I don't have the guts to try it yet.
