How about using their own illustrations?

A long time ago, while giving Bible studies to poor unsuspecting souls, I used one of their illustrations when people claimed that other religions had a lot of good things, and it went something like this:

"Yes, but would you drink a glass of water where most of it was good but it had a just a drop of poison in it?"

Then, I was just thinking this very morning.... I'll from now on use that same illustration on them, regarding issues like the UN, the spousal abuse, or the child molestation!

Any other illustrations they use that could be used the same way against them?

    DY,

This would be a great illustration to use in regards to many WT related things. Somebody brought up the point the other day that you would be accused of apostasy if you were following and speaking of the teachings of the WT in years past. This was really brought home to me when the elders and the society gave me some old WT articles to counsel me--some of them from the 1960s. Those articles were right next to some others which are now considered old light and would be considered apostate or thinking if I were to spread those ideas around. So is studying in the WT (especially in past years) like drinking a glass of water with a little bit of poison in it?

Should I believe you if you tell me your shit doesn't stink? Should I believe the Watchtower Society if they tell me their shit doesn't stink?

Kind'a rough, Nos, don't you think? Just a bit too much for my conservative taste.

The speaker at the Public Talk one Sunday brought out this illustration----if the waiter brought you a fork with a piece of old dried food on it, would you reject it or would you accept it because "most" of it was pretty clean?

If you were starving, I don't think you would give a darn.

I always say "hang them with their own words."

The WTS strains out the gnat and gulps down the camel.

    DY,

That's really great. I remember emphasizing that point to one of my most "progressive" Bible studies as well. Funny when you find yourself staring down the business end of your own illustration!

Here's another case; The JWs like to say that bringing up "previous misunderstandings" we may have had does not alter the facts as they stand today. (Quote from a poster on another board)

    No, I suppose not :o)

But all those "misunderstandings" were from "uninformed messengers" that had run ahead of Jehovah---many times. Their credibility is extremely low on the "truth" scale.

Remember when we were told some thing along the line of "if someone has told you the truth 100 times, wouldn't it be reasonable to conclude that the truth would be told 101st time?

Using WTS "reasoning"......if someone claimed that they "believed and taught"" that something would occur 10 times and it failed to come true---would you continue to put your trust in them?
