I love my girlfriend with all my heart and soul, but her family is very patriotic. I see it rubbing off on her, I see her friends rubbing off on her. The problem is, growing up in a witness household, patriotism was downplayed. As a result, we run into differing opinions on thiongs. For instince, her friend Jill, just got married to Dustin, who is a medic in the army. They are around our age, and so my girlfriend obviously sees us in the future when she looks at them. Problem is, she wants me to join the military. She wants me to be a medic so I dont have to go into combat (dont ask me why she thought that!) Her big reason is that the benifits are really good. I just finished re enrolling in college to start in the winter.

    Conversation from earlier:

Her: I was talking with jill earlier about how much children cost, just before you give birth. It'll end up being about $6000 dollars she said. And since the army covers health insurence...

Me: Honey, you know we've talked about this, and you know where i stand, I will not join the military in any way shape or form.

Her: Well then I guess we cant have kids unless we win the lottery or something.

    Me: (silence)

Her: It would just be to expensive.

    Me: *CLICK*

I couldnt believe what she was saying. So the rest of the people in the world that arent in the army just cant have children? I cant go back to school because I have to join the military? I have no more hopes or dreams? Because she wanted bleeping health insurence from the army?

    *twitch*

How do I make her understand that the army is not the end all and be all of jobs and health insurence? We've had fights like this before, but never before has she said that about children. I wanted to go back to school to get my bachlor's in business and marketing. Right after I told her that I enrolled, she started this whole thing up.

I dont want to join the miltiary because I dont have a high level of patriotism, especially right now. The pointless war, the monkeys in office...I dont want to die to defend those POS...Is that so wrong?

Well I myself am pretty patriotic even though I was raised a witness, but its ok if you aren't! I mean I don't know why she thinks that the army is the only way you are going to have gainful employment.

If you are serious about her though, you should be able to be able to provide, together, support for the household you make. Have you been to college? Have you considered enrolling in a local community college? Tuition is generally pretty cheap. Encourage her to broaden her horizons as well.

She's just anxious... $6000 seems like $1,000,000 to people who've never had to pay bills that big before. Guess what? $6000 is a drop in the bucket compared to all the other costs of raising kids over the years. It's better to think of those costs, too. Will an military salary cover all that--especially for an enlisted man? You can find pay scales on line for the military; look them up, and compare them.

Of course, you could argue that if you got a Bachelors degree, you could always become an OFFICER in the military as a last resort! That pay is much better, and has insurance. (Of course, you might land a better job after graduating anyway...) Don't aim low.

BTW: medics are close to combat. It's the surgeons and medical specialists who are the safest, back in hospitals in the US and Germany...

The military is ONE way that a man can support himself or his family. College is another. You've made your choice. You're obviously not happy with the choices *she's* making for you, witness or not. I'd say.. go with what YOU want to do, so you don't have to regret it the rest of your life.

With good pre-natal care costing around $500, deliver your own kids. I did. The birth certificate and eye drops cost $8. After all, pregnancy isn't a disease!

    My daughter cost $10.

I had to go to the doctor's to take the pregnancy test and I had to pay the co-pay of $10. From then on, I didn't have to pay any co-pays for my pre-natal visits or going to the hospital for delivery.

Go to college, get a job that has good health insurance. The military does not usually pay what Corporate America will pay.

Exactly. Getting an education is really what is needed if you want to start a family.

Pat Tillman, an Arizona Cardinals safety, walked away from a $3.6 million contract to join the Army Rangers. He turned down a multi-million dollar deal to earn $18,000 a year. Sure, he got great health insurance, until he was killed by friendly fire.

So, let's see. $18,000 per year, ... that's $346 per week ... or $8.65 per hour. Doesn't WalMart pay their full time folks about the same thing, along with some health insurance benefits & a 401-K plan? There's not as many bullets flying around the average WalMart, either.
