Celtic- it all sounds wonderful! It's nice that you're able to do this; take lots of pictures and be safe. You should, however, be wary when visiting the US. My great-grandfather had the idea to travel through all 50 states, working along the way. He started in an obvious place, geographically-Maine, our most Northeastern point. As it happened, he was so bewitched by the beauty of our state and its women that he never left. He married one of the women, built a house, raised a huge family, and NEVER LEFT. So, please be careful when traveling through Maine and Tennessee, that you don't get too bewitched, as well.

Like Simon, having children (at 21) and having to look after my mother meant I could'nt just do anything on a whim-i've got to be here for them...I hav'nt been bitten by the travel bug... i've been mauled by it and it's driving me insane...we've taken the children abroad alot though and they all think they travelling is better than the actual holiday...so maybe i'll be allowed to join them on their respective gap years...

when I was younger we lived abroad, as did most of the families we socialised with, staying away for a few years then returning for a while..my parents continued to travel when we all left home until they died and I've always felt since having children, that i'm waiting to go off somewhere again..it's very frustrating..... most of my school friends hav'nt got children and are still in their travelling phase 20 years later....

As soon as my youngest has finished his exams you wont see me for dust! I plan to sell the house, wrap up work and send lots of postcards.............I've always wanted to experience Tibet and to cross each continent on horseback; i'd love to trace the ancient trade routes in Asia using the indiginous horses of each region....i'd like to travel alone-but it's probably not a good idea, Turkey especially is supposed to be a nightmare for lone women.....I have a friend who rides who wants to see Jordan on camels......so now I have to start persuading one of my friends that ride to pack up their lives and ship out with me for the rest.....(gadget, I may have a plan for you...have you started those riding lessons yet...?)

good luck with your plans Celtic...I hope you make it-maybe we'll bump into eachother along the way...

Yeah, dh, Maine. Where all the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and the children are above average. You must visit us if you get the chance, esp. if you like backpacking-our trails are as lovely as our women.

I am still at work but soon I'll write about a one year long back-packing trip I did back in 1994 around the world with only $3,000

Sincerely, lots of the destinations I had are not a safe option today. But a place I'd go back in a flash is India. You can travel, sleep and eat like a pig for $10-$15 per day. I knew almost nothing about it but there are travel guides (books) updated yearly to orient you on things to do and places to stay.

    Cheers,

    Gerry

I've lived everywhere in the States. Been to France about 5 times Canada and Mexico.

I'm considering backpacking or biking Scotland this September with my daughter. For my 40th my wife said she wanted to pay for it.

    Thanks Baby!

Back in "94 there was a "round the world special" offered by Delta Airlines, Swiss Airlines and Singapore Airlines. ($2,200) You could have as many destinations as you want as long as you keep on flying East. They may still have it, but other airline companies do it too. Look at:

    http://www.airbrokers.com/html/around_the_world_travel.htm?ref=google&kw=like+around+the+world+FOCUS

    http://www.airtreks.com/tools/TripPlannerIntro.cgi?ref=ATLINK&dst=google--round_the_world_ticket

    http://www.roundtheworldflights.com/

My ticket book had several pages of "open-tickets" usable for 1 year. But nothing prevents you from taking an extra plane/boat/train to go North or South and then go back in route. You WILL meet other travelers doing the same thing as you and fun groups form as you go

The best books to find your way are published by "Lonely Planet" . Look for "Europe on a Shoestring", India on a Shoestring", Nepal on a Shoestring", "Egypt on a Shoestring", etc.

Once on route, my best advise: Use your instinct and plan each leg of your trip so that you arrive to your next destination in DAYLIGHT.

I did a month in Oz 2 years ago and decided to emigrate so put the papers in in january. We went to Sydney, Ayers Rock and Perth - which is like Cornwall but sunnier. I would highly recommend it

I spent a month backpacking round eastern Canada a few years ago, it was great and a real journey of self discovery as I had just split up with someone
