there is no future for him

Even if oil does crash, there will still be a future for your son. Capitalism will take a hit, and i suspect that the value of humans will increase. Capitalism has been way overhyped anyway.

This is just a ploy to resurrect the Donkey.

Interestingly look at the latest Businessweek (European Edition): the cover story: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_14/b3877007.htm

I truly hope that it is just a bunch of BS. But it's not. We will reach (hopefully we haven't yet): Peak Oil production. It is a mathematical certainty.

Now will we reach societal desecration as the author of http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ states? I do not know. Oil is currently used in over 3,000 (thousand) products. The spiking growth in consumption from China is frightening. China overtook Japan to become the second largest oil consuming nation and will soon challenge the US (reference http://www.economist.com/agenda/displayStory.cfm?story_id=2516309).

The choices are up to us as a society and as individuals. We can panic or do something. It all depends on what we see as the outcome. I have hedged financially for this and a few other events. But if we reach societal decay on the scale of the worst doomsayers predictions we are all toast. For this reason I am even considering moving offshore to another country - but thats my personal reaction. I am a kook I know, but thats how I have always been and will always be. I am afterall just a stupid donkey. The rest of humanity worries about nonsense...I worry about finding fuel for tractors so I don't have to pull a plow again!!!

*Shakes fist at Six* Don't you go raining on my doom and gloom parade there buddy!

SS, well I won't shut the door on all possibility of things not turning out quite so bad as the author of the article may imply, but it's hard not to imagine that things will get much better before they get far worse. Hunting and gathering anyone?

Donkey, you're the one who got me thinking about all this stuff, and it's getting hard to get out of bed in the mornings!

    Dan,

I will happily prove to be WRONG. I will receive joy in the fact that I am ridiculed about it because that is nothing in comparison to the issues we face if I am not.

I think the site: http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/Index.html is a better reference with some great research into this issue.

THERE ARE SUBTLE INDICATIONS IN HISTORICAL RECORDS AND IN THE STUDY OF GEOLOGY THAT INDICATE THAT THE EARTHS POPULATIONS HAVE REACHED A CRITICAL MASS OF ONE KIND OR ANOTHER AND DIED OFF BY THE MILLIONS IN TIMES LONG GONE BY.

THERE ARE ALSO SOME THINGS BEING DONE IN THE USA IN TECHNOLOGY, SUCH AS FIBER OPTIC LINES BEING LAID, WITH A LARGE PERCENTAGE DEDICATED TO MILITARY USE.

SO I HAVE NO PROBLEM BELIEVING THIS WILL SOME DAY SOON START TAKING EFFECT. I DO NOT THINK IT WILL HIT US WITHOUT WARNING.

HOPEFULLY THERE WILL BE ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE AND READJUST. ALTHOUGH I THINK THERE WILL BE UPHEAVAL AND TURMOIL.

IT IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE WEALTHY AND POLITICAL LEADERS TO FIND A SOLUTION. IF THEY DO NOT THEY WILL FACE AN ENRAGED POPULATION WITH NO REASON TO OBEY OR NOT ATTACK THE WEALTHY AND THE POLITICAL LEADERS.

ACTUALLY GOING BACK TO GROWING AND CANNING OUR OWN PRODUCE AND FENDING FOR OURSELVES IS NOT SUCH A BAD THING.

IT IS NOT SO LONG AGO THAT THIS IS HOW WE ALL LIVED AND SURVIVED. IN THE LIVES OF MY OWN PARENTS, THAT WAS LIFE AND WAS ACCEPTED.

ACTUALLY THIS ISSUE IS FAR DOWN ON THE PRIORITY OF MY WORRIES AND FEARS.

I haven't studied tha oil facts and figures. But, i know that these experts have cried wolf so may times, that i might as well flip a coin to decide if i believe this or not. During the sixties, all kinds of doomsday scenarios were being pumped out, including the running out of oil. Hell, it was even predicted that we would run out of oxygen.

Bush/cheney/rumsfeld are all military/industrial complex/oil complex. In other words, they might be working hand in glove w those groups. This oil scare may serve all of their purposes. It raises prices/profits for the oil companies, and the bad light it casts on the oil arabs makes bush team look better. The fear it generates among north americans also casts bush team as savious. 'Course, if oil really is running out, then history will make bush team look good. Anyway, for now, i remain a skeptic.

When you say that you think peak oil production occurred in 2000 and has gone down every year since, would this take into account the global recession for the last 3 years that we are now just starting to come out of. The recession could easily explain why oil production has gone lower due to lower demand.

If we should get rid of our pets, can we eat them?

Production has not peaked (or if it has we will only know about it after the fact). Consumption did not decline and is scheduled to increase as we bring Asian countries rapidly online eg. China and its close neighbors. http://www.climateark.org/articles/reader.asp?linkid=22526 Two articles of reference showing the differential between production and consumtion: http://pages.ca.inter.net/~jhwalsh/oilcapv.pdf and http://pages.ca.inter.net/~jhwalsh/oiltrdv.pdf One thing is certain, we will see a peak. The issue is: even if we find alternate sources of energy these take time to bring online and if we expect them to replace oil it is very likely to be a lond drawn out process (decades). we are spending cash on everything else instead of this problem. Politicians will wait until the problem is very bad and then they will spend money...we can only hope there is enough time.

To add to this we are expected to see the entitlement programs in the US run out of funding in this time period - just glorious timing.

If we should get rid of our pets, can we eat them?

    Donkey meat tastes terrible.

I'm going to leave this thread alone, thinking about this shit depresses the hell out of me and robs me of any enjoyment I might otherwise get from life.
