Does anyone know why Charles Rusell put the "Winged Egyptian Sun Disc" symbol on the covers of his Studies in the Scriptures?

Particularly, did Russell ever explain in writing the reason for his using it?

This is something I would really like to know.

P.S. This is a good article, but does not indicate if Russell wrote anything in print specifically about the symbol's use on the book covers.

I've done alot of reading and never saw any explanation why in his writings.

in the 1870's, Pennsylvania was a hotbed of "Neo"-Rosicrucian activity. A lot of the groups specifically were using Egpytian symbolism and mythology in their teachings (some of these groups are still around, or merged with other Orders). I think Russell just borrowed willy-nilly.

This is guess, but if he used the great pirimid near cairo ejypt to calculate 1914. Why not use the winged sun disk of ra for the renewal of life. Amon oops Amen

If anyone here knows the answer to that, it would be RR, in my opinion. My money's on him.

I suspect that Gitasatsangha is correct.

I heard it had something to do with his affiliation with the Mason's, but don't know that for a fact, though it is mightly suspicious...The Davinci Code is a good book out right now--a religious historical novel--very interesting--explains some of the Mason stuff in there--seems like there could be a connection...

    Hi,

I haven't heard an actual explanation for this but, at a guess, its probably connected with his interests in Egypt (pyramidoligy), freemasonry, and general occultism. I have written a couple of articles on Russell's interests in these areas:

Well, RR had posted a resonse to Celtic in the thread, Divine Plan of the Ages - Sundisk? - CT Russell Roessel???

    http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/11/64393/1.ashx

    In that thread, RR wrote:

As to the wingsun symbol. Russell stated that it reminded him of the scriptures in proverbs shich describes Jesus as the "sun with healing in his wings."

What I would like to know is where Russell made that statement.

P.S. I want to add this. Found the scripture, it is:

... the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings. -- Malachi 4:2 (NKJ)

Malachi wrote after Judea was a provence (satrapi?) of the Persian Empire. (around 450bc or so). Zoroastrianism was more or less the state religion in the empire. Angels in Zoroastrianism (Fravashis), are often represented by winged disks. You can Google that term and run into various articles on that.
