Oh, how many times have we heard the loud hard spankings of toddlers' and preschool aged children by their parents for making noise at the meetings echo from inside of the Kingdom Hall restrooms? Until now it was a memory I had forgotten, but it really bugs me now.

Canada has a new law on discipline of children...
These new guidelines will help for they are quite specific on the type of dicipline a parent can dish out to their kids.
With the new law alot of J.W. parents would be hauled off to court I think.
I must go look again for those guidelines and post them up here on your thread.

Some countries outlaw spanking. Norway is one. A poster on JWD said the WTS had to manually update all the mentions of spanking in their publications in Norway and give strong counsel against it at the KH. So JWs don't spank in Norway but can in the US. Pretty hypocritical.

I found the new law guidelines.
New guidelines laid down Friday by the Supreme Court of Canada on the "reasonable" use of force to discipline children.
1.- Parents will not face criminal charges for "minor" corporal punishment of children aged two through twelve.
2.- Corporal punishment unacceptable for children under two and for teenagers.
3.- No use of implements other than the open hand, such as rulers or belts.
4.- No striking of child on face or head.
5.- Discipline must be for "educational" or "corrective" purposes, not motivated by anger or frustration.
6.- There must be no lasting bodily harm.
7.- Punishment must not be "inhuman" or "degrading."
8.- Corporal punishment in schools is unacceptable. Teachers may restrain students, for example to escort them from classroom, but must not hit them.
With the #1 above. I would think it would be wrong for parents to be spanking and slapping children under 2 years old back in the bathroom.

One elders wife in particular was guilty of doing this when I went to the hall. It disgusted me that she was in the bathroom and all you could hear were slaps and screams, I mean - how much slapping do you have to do with a 2 year old?????!!!!! I'm sure the child would be red raw after all that. When I was a kid, my mum hardly ever actually slapped me, and when she did, one light slap on the legs was enough!
Now it all makes sense that noone ever said anything at the hall about it. That family still attend today and he is still an elder. It makes you wonder what goes on at home.....

honestly, i don't think there is a problem with disciplining a child by hitting. there is a difference between disciplining a child and beating a child. the problem is a lot of parents nowadays don't know the difference.
It is amazing the awful things this board can stir from long-dead memory. How could I have ever forgotten about that??? BTW, my mom tells me of her experience when she converted to the JWs in the '70s. The Witness sisters taught her how to "properly" correct her children and advised her on the most effective implements for this purpose.

is it okay for a husband to hit his wife if he feels he has been wronged
Or what if you were at work and a co-worker did come over and whack you one for some thing they felt you had really done wrong. what do you think you would feel like?

My parents would have been jailed in Canada. Congratulations to Canada for actually writing sensible laws that benefit people!!!!
I remember hearing spankings all the time. I dont understand how young children are expected to sit still for so long!! grrr
It was nothing unusual for me to get hauled in the bathroom and spanked when I was little. It was and still is expected of JW's to discipline their children that way.
