I would also recommend that nobody uses images from the sites, which happens when you copy and paste threads. It's best to do a print screen and save the clipboard as an image and post that instead.

I just read your post ...that's exactly what I bet happened! I posted something similar in the other thread.

Ah. I see. So, to be sure I understand correctly, since the request for the WW image will happen after the request for the JWD page, the referrer in the image request will be JWD. In that request, you will have revealed your IP address as a person who visits JWD. So they have to actually save all such IPs and then compare them to the posting IPs to find the infiltrators? So they actually have some function - maybe one that runs on a daily basis or something - to do the comparison. Like FindApostateIPs(). Sheesh. These guys are hard-core Nazis, aren't they?

actually they are good people. They really are only trying to protect their members.. I don't fault them. I feel sorry for them. They are still caught up in that.. what does Sixy call it? JW Box? They don't know yet it is safe to come out.

That's exactly what I'd do if I were running a JW site.

and THAT is a LOT of work!! believe me I know..

and those with AOL do not have static IPs, so if you ban their IP, you might actually ban a current member.. Imagine their surprise when they log in and are told they are banned..

Well, basically, yeah. To be precise, the referrer for an image request should always be the page the image is embedded in.

In that request, you will have revealed your IP address as a person who visits JWD. So they have to actually save all such IPs and then compare them to the posting IPs to find the infiltrators? When I was at JWZone, we used a much simpler system... just placed a cookie with the referrer URL the first time anyone made a request to our site. That actually caught the vast majority of applicants.

An actual log check would be more secure, however; although like Sassy said, you'd have to exclude proxied IPs. So a combination of cookies and logs would probably be the strongest protection.

Sheesh. These guys are hard-core Nazis, aren't they?

Well, yes and no. As loyal JWs, the only way that we could have a website was by keeping apostates out. We did what we had to do to accomplish that.

I actually had someone apply once at JWZone who had a JWD referral. I deleted his application, but he applied again. So I e-mailed him; and he e-mailed back and told me he was a Witness and had just been checking out JWD out of curiosity. I checked his KH number in the phonebook and he agreed to call me from that number. I let him join the site.

So I don't think I was a Nazi. Some JWs might have been less flexible, of course. But there are a lot of ex-elders on this site, who've disfellowshipped people. That's much worse than blocking someone from a website, but I don't think that they were Nazis either. They were just doing what they thought they had to do.

It would be a pretty serious security flaw if a browser did this. I just tested IE6 and it works as it should. I assume Mozilla and Firebird also behave correctly. Do you know which browsers do not handle this correctly?

I just tested Mozilla and NS 4.79 and they're correct. Unfortunately, I don't remember what browser I found this flaw in... it was a couple of years ago when I tested this.

Avoid the referrer tag. Every time you go to a website, your browser sends it your 'referrer', the site you were at last.

Hey Doc, as touched on, this applies to porn too. Just a word up.

    a) Using the same username. (Yes, people have done this.)
    b) Mentioning when you registered or when you first posted
    c) Identifying any posts that you wrote

    Guilty on all counts

Yep, I just got an email from WitnessWorld...they kicked me off because my referrer tag showed hot-steamy-apostates.com. Damn!!
