Yesterday I posted that my computer was all messed up and that Simon had helped me to eliminate the problem.

Well, now I know what the culprit was. You know those cute little smileys many of us have downloaded and are using to add to our posts? The program that detects problems in your computer, eliminated that one. I don't have it anymore now, and I miss it,.................. but I don't miss the problems it caused.

So, if anyone here has that smiley thing on your computer system, and are having problems, uninstall that one and see what happens. Don't forget to reboot.

Is it the smiley central thing? It just showed up one day. I have to keep Rhys off my computer! Argh!!

What sort of problems were you having?

Yeah, those "free" smiley programs can be a pain in the butt. What I like to do to get around them is copy and paste any smilies I like into an HTML file. When I'm posting I just copy from my "smilies" file into the post I am writing.

Hi Mulan, Glad your computer is working again...Yes smiley central is chock full of spyware! after uninstalling it also run a program such as adaware which will get rid of the spy/malware left behind by it's install.

Rachel, the computer was making a noise like a fan, and the cursor was all over the place, but only when I was on the internet. Email wasn't affected. Simon had me check my CPU usage and it was at 100%. Now it is between 2 and 7%. I could only be on the internet for about 5 minutes before the "fan" would start and I couldn't navigate at all.

This is what I used. http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

    Mulan,

I'd been having trouble with my computer for a couple of months. I had one computer expert in and he played around, the problem went away, he said he'd be back, he didn't come, the problem returned! I telephoned and left messages but still he didn't return.

My problem was that every time I tried to open a Word document I could have made myself a cup of tea and cheese on toast before it opened. And closing the computer down was always met with problems.

I decided I had nothing to lose and downloaded the program you used. VOILA! Computer now working great!! THANK YOU!!! Thank you, Simon!!!

Ian, that is great news. It found 97 bad files on mine, and they all were probably those cutesy smileys.

Spybot is a good one, and Ad-Aware is another good one. Good rule of thumb, don't download any toolbars!! Anything that seems helpful...they're not doing it to help YOU out, believe me. They're loaded with adware and spyware.
