    Can Islam be reformed though?

Could it, for example, be accepted eventually that only the Quran, and only the NICE parts of it, need to be followed?

How did Judaism - the non- orthodox kind - become one of the most progressive and open of religions, considering their holy text is so violent?

    Maybe that should be studied?

It is a great video, she is a great lady - a true feminist fighting for the rights and freedoms of others. Hard to believe that anyone could label her of all people an extremist ... yet that is what the SPLC did.

I think the problem is that Islam cannot be reformed. It's been attempted in 1,400 years and failed every time. It has just gone through a reformation and produced a much deadlier purer version, one that's promoted by the likes of ISIS but also widespread in many countries where they implement the most strict and barbaric forms of Sharia.

The best that could happen is that the more benign forms be more dominant. But that is unlikely because they are less vociferous. In the same way that Islam itself is more likely to spread than Judaism for instance - the more deadly virus is easier to contract, attacks more and is more likely to make inroads and take over any host that doesn't defend itself.

Islam believes the Quran is perfect and complete. Nothing can be added or removed. A core part of being a muslim is to follow the example set by Mohammed, who was a vile character. Re-writing that and convincing so many people to go along with it would be a clever trick indeed.

As there are few ways to alter the teaching itself, the best approach is to promote pretend-Islam where people pretend to be Muslim in a half hearted way like people pretend to be Catholic just for social reasons.

The only way to enable this is to remove the consequences - that means no Sharia laws or theocracy-controlled areas ... at all levels and in all places, we can start by clearing out some of the Sharia shit that already exists in our own countries, putting a stop to the takeover of schools and government and cutting funds to any Mosque or Madrassa caught teaching hate. Promotion of it needs to be shot down instantly, wherever it happens and the rights of people to live free of it's control needs to be defended.

Right now that can't happen because the left see it as a political ally against the right and anyone who tries to do the right thing is labeled by them. That needs to be reversed. Anyone defending or promoting the Sharia-Islam needs to be ridiculed, humiliated and ostracized from any discussion and any controlling body for schools, towns and countries, not portrayed as heroes. Groups acting as funding go-betweens need to be labeled for what they are and shut down and their influence removed.

But do I think Islam is going to be reformed any time soon? Why would it, they're winning - what is to make them change when they are making so many inroads and getting so much influence? Expect more of the same, not less, because we have incentivized the wrong thing.

Parts of the bible text is violent, but nowhere near as much as Islamic texts and mostly it's historical, telling stories of what happened, not giving commands of what people must do.

More for Christianity, the idea that the bible and religion was reformed is really incorrect and promoted by people who try to make the religions equivalent. The bad parts are superseded by better moral parts and any reformation was based more on religious politics of who was allowed to read and interpret it and in what language, not what the message within it actually was.

With Islam it's completely the reverse - whatever "peace" message it originally had was replaced with Jihad with the notion that both are true at the same time (a concept called dualism). The peaceful Mohammed was a complete failure and Islam would have quickly died out, it was Jihad that gave him his big break and success and it's been the thing that has give it success ever since.

Since Simon mentioned the Southern Poverty Law Center, this is a very interesting article about how corrupt they have become, written actually by a Jewish man.

Some interesting notes from the article:

The SPLC lists the David Horowitz Freedom Center as a hate group. But then again it also lists the American College of Pediatricians and the Jewish Political Action Committee as hate groups.

It doesn’t take much to be listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

You don’t need to be a group to be listed by the SPLC as a hate group. You don’t even need to have a pulse. Inanimate plastic signs can be listed too.

The rest of the SPLC’s “increase” is padded out with assorted community groups opposed to refugee resettlement, such as Treasure Valley Refugee Watch, and any Christian ministry it doesn’t like.

No amount of overt anti-Semitism from CAIR’s Nihad Awad would ever get the Islamist hate group listed as a hate group. Even CAIR’s flirtation with Neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers can’t get it on the hate map. The SPLC collaborated with the Muslim Public Affairs Council despite its anti-Semitism.

The Jihadist element to Islam is unique, all religions are not created equal, and Islam is the worst. Those who try to disarm it to become more like Christianity and so on, are labeled extremists and racists. Until that changes and adherents aren't regarded as some sort of vulnerable oppressed group, but individuals accepting an ideology, nothing will change.

Another victim of the SPLC Maajid Nawaz, a British activist, author, columnist, radio host and politician. He was the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for London's Hampstead and Kilburn constituency in the 2015 general election. He is also the founding chairman of Quilliam, a counter-extremism think tank that seeks to challenge the narratives of Islamist extremists. THE SPLC HAS LABELED HIM AN ANTI-ISLAM EXTREMIST.

As Exjws this should be of interest to all of you and your freedoms. By merely trying to reform a RELIGION you could be labeled as a Hate-group participant.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFhHwlWUo_s Priest will continue to abuse children, as long as grown ups willingly take them to the priest for some kind of ceremony that shakes the evil out of them. Seems like all "faiths" have a dark side.

How did Judaism - the non- orthodox kind - become one of the most progressive and open of religions, considering their holy text is so violent?

There is a textual basis for non-violence in both orthodox and non-orthodox religions. The Old Testament is not the only book Jews use, both Jewish movements use other books that interpret the OT in terms of non-violence In Islam however, there is the Koran and Hadith and violence is integrated into the religion (the more observant, the more violent) in our modern world. There are 1.6 billion Muslims There is no rank and file in Islam .How do you get all those people to reform? I can't see it being done from within in the modern world .

Islam is also a political religion because Islamic government enforces Islamic laws. Jews are waiting for the Messiah to take "political" action while Islamic movements are seeking to take political action to cause change and that requires violence. The only way I see Islamics reform is if they become westernized and become less observant and see Islam in other term for practical reasons and figure that they do not need religion to control their lives, like in western countries. But that would need some catalyst.

Although the SPLC has earned a certain level of skepticism (this site would probably qualify as a hate crime because the JW's were added as a protected group by the SPLC). I find facts to be helpful. Look at the FBI report Here

There is no doubt that hate crimes are on the rise. I think it's because the call to "make America great again" and the widespread admiration of "straight talk" are codespeak for those who harbor the worst racist, sexist and religious bias. They see the current political agenda as a way to have their voices heard.

The alarming thing is how quickly "straight talk" turns into violence. Here in NY, just recently a woman was beaten while working at her desk at JFK for wearing a hijab, Swastikas were scrawled on subway cars. JCC's all over are being threatened.

As a liberal and a newly minted atheist I have no love loss for Islam and it's violence. But like the gay dude at airport security in the anti-homo video the society put out, this very significant part of humanity are not going to just drop their religious and cultural identities at the metal detector because I don't like the way they treat women.
