I just visited a Unitarian Universalist church today for the first time. I enjoyed it! The reverend was a female and she gave a sermon about mystics. I felt welcome there and plan on attending future services, when there will be a sermon topic I'm interested in hearing about. Just thought I'd share. Anyone else ever attended a Unitarian church? Thoughts?

on cults

did the whole thing without telling them which group I had been with

until someone asked me at the end

I visited a few times, mainly because I heard they have a great library, and indeed they do. The service was okay, and everybody seemed sincere and friendly, but I still left feeling a bit "empty" due to running into two men who showed no hesitancy in condeming the Bible and those who feel that it's inspired. Once they found out how I felt about it they toned down their criticism, but they seemed to treat me like a child who still has a lot to learn. Mind you, not everybody there was of that mindset, but I stopped going since I didn't want to run into those two again. There is a break-away group that advocates the Bible. Their website is at http://www.biblicalunitarian.com/html/. I've been in touch with them and feel they offer much more of what I was looking for.

Herk - I don't blame you! That sounds contradictory to what their literature says they're all about....that they accept all spiritual views...we even sang a song today about how your spirituality is yours personally. Sorry to hear you had a negative experience.

I was a UU for 7 years, until I realized I needed much more glamor and weirdness in my spiritual life than they could supply. Rather than try to change the church, I went off adventuring.

LadyLee - Yep yep! Took that test and scored 100% UU as well!

SpunkyChick, if you scored 100% UU (as I did), then you're probably a perfect UU. I've been a member since the early '90s. I love it because I feel no compunction to attend when I don't feel like it, yet when I do, I thoroughly enjoy it and feel no guilt for having been away for a long time. I think the minister makes all the difference. Ours is terrific. He's Jewish by upbringing and *does* believe in the Bible, although he keeps his Biblical rhetoric to a minimum. He jokes that when he mentions the Bible, half the church complains, and when he doens't mention it, the other half complains. :-) That's UUism for you. Lots of different beliefs--everything from Christians to aethiests (of which I'm one). If you want to belong to a group that is truly interesting in helping others, the UU church is the place for you. Our church is involved in all kinds of community activities, many of them in conjunction with other religions (such as Catholic Services). I tend to think that aethists feel more comfortable there, but I happen to know that there are also a lot of Christians in our church, and they seem to feel at home as well.

I highly recommend it. But, then, it all depends on what you're looking for. Good luck!
