I think religion can cause a form of insanity which can develop fears, anxieties, superstitions, prejudices, hatred and ignorance, potentially not healthy in other words.
But I think we shouldn't make a brush stroke over them all, for some are not as indulgently harmful as others.
“With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.”
― Steven Weinberg
Why do people ignore politics? It has been estimated that more people died because of Communism and Fascism than because of religious wars
Hitler killed millions and so did Stalin . Not to mention communist regimes in Korea and Vietnam plus the Pol Pots and Idi Amins of the world .
Political ideology is just as dangerous as religious fanaticism.
Violent and unstable people will always find a " cause " to hitch their wagon to in order to legitimise what they do .

True Jan but this thread is about religion and all of those dire consequences I mentioned about religion can come from political ideologies too even worse.

This is just an example of evil people doing evil things
But if you want a good man to do something evil, it helps to use some sort of religious persuasion.
Tony Morris in that trench coat looks like the guy in High Anxiety.
Rafe, l think that you are saying that all of the paranoia and guilt etc can be induced in individuals by political ideology . I think so . In Nazi Germany some " good " Germans believed Hitler's rhetoric about Jews and turned on their neighbours, sometimes friends .
In communist regimes paranoia and brain washing are used to keep the populace being loyal . With the result that " good " people do bad things.
I understand that the brainwashing techniques used by the WT were devised in North Korea for political purposes
Fear , paranoia and guilt are not exclusive to religion ( some religion ) .
Most mainstream religions , even in the USA , do not produce these negatives in their followers
The vicar at the time sent this as one of his daily emails to the congregation of my church ( apologies for my friends picture on the screen shot ) .
Does that seem like someone trying to induce fear or guilt or anything other than a positive mental health attitude ?

Political ideology is just as dangerous as religious fanaticism - yes, I absolutely agree.
When we think of suicide bombers we often think of Al Qaeda nutters.
But members of Kurdish separatist groups have blown themselves up in Turkey (I think).
Political ideology can sometimes be more subtle than religious fanaticism but it is still dangerous.
We have biological males - beards penis, testicles, the lot - using female only spaces such as toilets because they claim to be women. This is going on because of trans ideology. If, like me, you believe in questioning things, you can't question this because you're shouted down as a 'terf'.
This is a big issue with ideologies - people who adopt them typically don't want them questioned, even though potential damage could be done.
