Vidiot, this is what the elders showed me that said they could make rules, very open-ended. WT1985 7/1 p. 22 pp.18 "This does not mean, however, that Jehovah’s people do not need to observe any rules. The apostle Paul reminds us: “Let all things take place decently and according to order.” (1 Corinthians 14:40, NW Ref. Bi., footnote) A few rules may be needed at our Kingdom Halls, for example, to economize on the use of electricity or to prevent young children from using God’s house of worship as a playground after meetings. Family heads may need to make some orderly arrangements, such as providing for regular consideration of the daily Bible text in the home. In Bethel families there are rules, such as requiring that family members adorn the good news by modest dress and grooming. (1 Timothy 2:9) The “scrolls” to be opened during Jesus’ Thousand Year Reign will no doubt contain rules that will benefit mankind. It is good now to become accustomed to obeying healthful rules that are made for orderliness and out of consideration for others.—Revelation 20:12; 1 Corinthians 10:24; Philippians 2:3, 4."

What would this even be about anymore? It would be like Scientology throwing out Dianetics.

It wouldn't be about much of anything. That's why I threw out the idea of them becoming one of those mega churches that millions of Americans attend. Sermons based on the self-help section at Barnes and Noble, with a scrap of Jesus thrown in.

It's not "about" anything. It's about the curious fact that a lot of people (at least in America) feel some need to feel religious. Or at least appear religious. These places do it with the absolute minimal amount of effort required. Come for an hour at noon on Sunday, hear a band play songs about Jesus and please don't forget to donate on your way out.

I got dragged to one by an aunt and uncle a decade ago. I relented and attended out of sheer curiosity. I have no clue what in the world the audience got from it. It was weird. But they pop up all over. People are strange.

I don't understand why people would toast. Wouldn't that break the glasses?

I think toasting is just good will to fellow beings..

Which is contrary to the governing body demands. Which they demand all praise for themselves.

Beth Sarim - The Governing Body does not demand anything. At least from me. And if they did, why be concerned?

Customs are stupid. They are not logical. Extra thoughts and work just for no reason such as string lights.

Covering the mouth when yawning. wedding rings. are not pagan and never have been.

The current GB inherited the 'rules' of the past GBs going back to Knorr/Franz who wanted to please God in everything. Kind of like the pharisees.

But doing things like that was never necessary because God does not care. So the current GB is examining everything. So why complain?

Maybe it's the circles I move in , but in 65 years I've only been in one situation ever where a toast was even mentioned, a high school graduation party for a witness brother, where an elder asked everyone to come together. A non JW in attendance asked if we were going to do one...(of course not, a prayer!!).

I still thnk the reason for the change is that the Governing Body and their circle is involved in so many real estate and business deals involving "outside" groups. Toasts were possibly being made to the success of these projects and abstaining from these made them look awkward.

I also still think the reason beards were "approved" was because Mark Sanderson himself wanted to grow one.

Still astounded at how Instantly many brothers started growing one. I have not looked around on social media, but wonder if there have already been a slew of pictures posted of witnesses raising glasses..?
