Personally I wouldn't do this. This is no substitute for running a firewall and keeping your system patched. XP comes with a built-in firewall and it works very well, actually.
I don't think it's a substitute - it may be an extra layer of defense though. As a general approach it's better to start with everything turned off and access disabled and only turn on and grant access as required. Windows 2003 is a big step forward in this regard as a lot of stuff (esp web related) is not even installed by default anymore and you have to explicitly allow it (a real pain the first tim you try and use it before the documentation is finished and you can't figure out why your web pages don't run on the web server you just setup LOL)

I am glad someone else brought this up. I started a thread yesterday on the subject, and was hoping to get more responses...oh well....
At any rate, I have used the DCOMbobulator, to shut the 135 port, and turn off dcom.
So far, I have encountered no problems.
One good thing about the dcombobulator is, you can use it to test the port if nothing else.
I am still interested in this topic, as it is important. That worm a few weeks ago was brutal!!
I never want that to happen to my puter again. For me, there is no need for anyone or any program to access my computer via the net. But that is just me.
Someone mentioned that perhaps norton antivirus would be disabled, does anyone know for sure?
