Sorry to hear that Sadie5. He probably has so few friends that he was afraid someone might see him and turn him in and then he would have no "friends."
I am inactive (well officially by the end of this month). So far no one has treated us as if we are DF'd. We have met a few people at the supermarket and parking lots of stores. I find that if I didn't see people at the KH (such as switching to a new congregation), few people at the old KH kept in touch. It's a religion of convenience, out of sight, out of mind. But if someone has been gossiping and you've been marked informally, things can get nasty. Or if someone is jealous.
Stacy's parents seem to have a good idea. Just be friendly. Don't let them determine your mood or personality.
