The earliest uses of the name or spelling was just three letters. A similar name was used for the Egyptian moon god and the Assyrian high god. Since the Canaanites were so heavily influenced by the Egyptians many believe thier god EL was the same as one of the gods of Egypt. Solomon's (which means son of Amon) temple looks remarkabley like some of those built in Egypt.
