Leaders of the Jehovah's Witnesses have been told to pay a rape victim more than £60,000 damages by a High Court judge.

The woman was raped by a fellow Jehovah's Witness after going door-to-door evangelising near Cardiff, Glamorgan, 30 years ago, Mr Justice Chamberlain heard.

A "judicial committee" of Jehovah's Witnesses' elders had, in 1991, found the woman's allegations against Mark Sewell "not proven" at an internal inquiry.

But more than 20 years later Sewell was investigated by police.

He was convicted of raping the woman and indecently assaulting two other people after a trial in 2014, and was given a 14-year prison sentence. READ MORE: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/jehovahs-witnesses-leaders-ordered-pay-17661919

    Thanks for posting this Barbara.

If only Judicial Committees had a directive like doctors - first do no harm.

Unfortunately, it's a pittance in terms of the damage caused, and compared to the vast wealth of the corporation.

What should be shouted from the rooftops is that a self appointed, entirely partial jury of abuse enablers, failed to do anything about it at the time, and it appears 20 years elapsed before any type of justice was set in motion.

Seems therefore they did not pass on what they knew to police, which should be a crime in itself.

In Britain there’s another legal system working in secret, with no training, no consequences, medieval attitudes to women and children and whose decisions are in reality entirely arbitary and often reliant on who you’re related to. It also has a power far greater than secular courts of law held over the heads of both accused and victim - the power to take away your loved ones.

Time it was stopped entirely frankly.

It would be the cost to their reputation that would be it greatest concern here.

I remember the Mark Sewell case coming to court... It seems it has not entirely gone away. I note that Cong Trustees were also liable.... something to think of before signing that piece of paper?..

    That's a few more Kingdom Halls(tm) sold.

The GovBod (piss be upon them), should be made to pay for their crimes of protecting their like minded sexual predators every time now.

Hopefully with less money at stake, Watchtower will pay up without appealing the judgement.
