Watchtower 1964 page 352 "....before God cursed it the snake had legs that elevated it off the ground. God transformed its body so that it ceased to have legs and could move on its belly."

Book "Gods Eternal purpose"1974 - "God did not put a curse on the whole serpent family...it had only been victimised by Satan..."

After 100 years they decided the snake was just a poor victim of the devil.

That WT QFR is very interesting, I had never seen that before and assumed the idea had been dropped many years previously.

I do remember however, and in fact quoted it recently on a thread here, that the book "The truth shall make you free" carried a picture of this lizard like creature talking to Eve.

The teaching on walking snakes pre-Eden clearly didn’t have a leg to stand on

I see a glaring problem with this.

Hasn't God been having a rest day since the creation of Eve. Wouldn't any change made to the physical world since then by God constitute breaking his own law of the sabbath, of which he is supposed to represent the perfect example?

Some poor guy got stoned for gathering sticks on the sabbath but God redesigns snakes, makes manna fall from the sky, creates rainbows, carves the ten commandments, makes the sun stand still and many other miracles that amount to doing 'work' and its fine?

The question is, who was running the show in 1964 and then later in 1974 that did not like wild speculations?

They brought this subject up again in the June 15, 2007 watchtower in another question from readers. The title was, "Did the serpent that spoke to Eve have legs?" Here's the watchtower quote:

"The Bible does not specifically state that the animal used in tempting Eve had previously had legs but lost them. While the wording at Genesis 3:14 might lead some to think so, we need not necessarily conclude that prior to this curse, serpent had legs. Why not?"

Then they go on to explain in four paragraphs why this is not so. They did not mention in the article that the society used to believe that it once possessed limbs.

Anyway, look up the biology of the Boa and the Python and you'll see some weird facts.

Yup. There's lots of examples of God interfering with free will but this is the first one where he actually does some physical tinkering!

    Oh wow! ACTFTU

Google: "Pythons and boa constrictors have tiny hind leg bones buried in muscles toward their tail ends. Such features, either useless or poorly suited to performing specific tasks, are described as vestigial. They are also intriguing evidence of the evolutionary histories of species".
