    Family joke: Some acquaintance of ours, unfamiliar with grits, looked at the menu in a restaurant and asked what a "grit" was.

    I've told this story on here before now.

    At one convention, a now departed brother was simply incredulous that a Canadian family had never seen or tasted grits.

    Since grits are so much a part of our culture, he thought they just HAD to be everywhere.
