I wonder if any of you who are outraged over this are as equally outraged over the Dixie Chicks having a guitar painted as the American Flag and autographed as well? If you are really going to strain the gnat, shouldn't you completely strain it?

Are you as morally outraged at bikers in Sturgis also autographing, not a toy replica of a flag, but a real flag?

Since proper disposal of flag has been mentioned, do all who receive personal mail remove the new stamp, which is often also an American flag, and properly burn it too? Indeed, shouldn't the US Post Office also be accused of defacing the flag since their canceling machines place marks over that same stamp?

Funny that the US Supreme Court, in 1989, ruled burning the flag in protest is legal and protected (Texas vs Johnson), but one man signs a replica of it and many are ready to prosecute him.

    Dakota,

Good to see you posting again.

Last year I hosted a party, where several of my business contacts (military officer's) were invited. I found myself in WalMart purchasing some 'party favors', one of which was a table cloth printed with overlapping american flags. I found myself standing there debating the purchase, for just what you described above.

Funny, imo it was ok to purchase the table cloth, but not the dinnerware with the same pattern????? Somehow that was going to far.

It is for the very same reason I cannot purchase those bandana's (sweat bands) depicting the flag. To me it is offensive. Go figure.

I'm a right-winger Bush supporter, and a pro- American warhawk. But I can't really see the point of making a fuss over the flag. It's a symbol, and like all symbols, it means different things to different people. It isn't magic, it isn't valuable, it won't fend off lava or stop a bullet.

Which is more important at the Iwo Jima monument? the Flag going up or the men holding up the flag? In my opinion, its the men, having struggled to the top, pausing to encourage their comrades with the symbol of their courage. And it is possible to desecrate the flag without ever touching it, such as when our soldiers massacred a village by the name of My Li in Vietnam. Then Old Glory becomes the symbol of unrestrained strength and insane, paranoid violence.

There is more American honesty and pride in a hippie burning his flag to piss off the establishment government, than in all the kids standing at attention every morning, hands on hearts, giving token lip service to a tattered rag on the wall.

The flag on the moon, I'm proud of. We put it there. It is a symbol of the struggle, national effort, and sacrifice we went through to show mankind what it could do if it wanted to.

The flag hanging in the rain outside the used car dealer? I'm not attached to in any way.

Is this were the threats of another deletion start for not following the party line?

    There is no "party line".

People are deleted if they are unable to behave in a civilised manner.

Some people might not be familiar with that law. Apparently GW Bush is one of them. I don't think he would knowingly deface the US flag. He probably thought he was improving its value by autographing it, like a baseball player when he signs a baseball. People make mistakes and I think it is probably one he would correct if brought to his attention. It just seems petty to harp on these little mistakes all the time.

    Peeps, please!!!!

This thread is simply a topic on flag ettiquette..

Personally, I found simons response about his shorts, funny, and witty...

I take my flag seriously, I treasure it, it's symbolism means alot to me and mine. I am a republican, and happen to like Bush.

He should have known better, though...And he bumbles all the time, and is often the butt, lol, of jokes...So what???

Its just a little humor......Which, we need more of 'round here in my opinion....

Matty, it's not the culture thing I'm against, it's just that some things are better left just the way they are.
