    1874

    The Watchtower, November 1, 1922, pp.332-337

Do you believe it? Do you believe that the King of glory is present, and has been since 1874?… This is the day of all days. Behold, the King reigns! You are his publicity agents. Therefore advertise, advertise, advertise, the King and his kingdom.”

    The Watchtower, November 1, 1922, p. 333
“Bible prophecy shows that the Lord was due to appear for the second time in the year 1874. Fulfilled prophecy shows beyond a doubt that he did appear in 1874. Fulfilled prophecy is otherwise designated the physical facts; and these facts are indisputable.”

    1878

    The Watchtower February 1, 1925, p.371

“It is the understanding of the consecrated that the sleeping saints were resurrected in 1878.”

The Time Is At Hand, 1902, p. 101.
“Be not surprised, then, when in subsequent chapters we present proofs that the setting up of the Kingdom of God is already begun, that it is pointed out in prophecy as due to begin the exercise of power in A.D. 1878, and that the "battle of the great day of God Almighty" (Rev. 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership, is already commenced..”

    1914

    The Watchtower, January 15, 1892, p. 1355

“The date of the close of that ‘battle’ is definitely marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874.”

    The Watchtower, June 15, 1954, p.370

“Why then, do the nations not realize and accept the approach of the climax of judgment? It is because they have not heeded the world-wide advertising of Christ's return and his second presence. Since long before World War I Jehovah's witnesses pointed to 1914 as the time for this great event to occur.”

    1918

    The Watchtower, October 1, 1986, p.14

“The Watchtower has long presented the view that this resurrection of anointed Christians from death commenced in the year 1918.”

Praise Jah for His Judgments! Chap. 38 p. 274 par. 6

“It was in 1918 that Jehovah began rewarding 'those fearing his name, the small and the great'-the first of these being the anointed Christians who had died faithful, whom he resurrected and stationed in the heavenly ranks of the 24 elders.” (Revelation 11:18)

    The Watchtower, The August 1, 1960 p. 462

“When Jesus came to God’s spiritual temple in 1918 for the purpose of judging men, Christendom was rejected.

    The Finished Mystery (SS-7), 1917 ed., p. 485

“Also, in the year 1918, when God destroys the churches wholesale and the church members by millions, it shall be that any that escape shall come to the works of Pastor Russell to learn the meaning of the downfall of ‘Christianity.’”

"On arriving to inspect the 'slave' in 1918, Christ found a spirit-anointed remnant of faithful disciples who since 1879 had been using this journal and other Bible-based publications to provide spiritual 'food at the proper time.' He acknowledged them as his collective instrument, or 'slave,' and in 1919 entrusted them with the management of all his earthly belongings." WT 2007 4/1 p. 22 par. 5

    1919

God's Kingdom of a Thousand Years Has Approached pp.350

On inspecting the remnant of his anointed disciples in the year 1919 C.E., the reigning King Jesus Christ did find the appointed slave... faithful and discreet in the feeding of his domestics. Accordingly, he appointed this slave class over all his belongings."

The Watchtower, July 15, 2013, “Who Really is the faithful and discreet slave?” p.22

“In 1919, Jesus selected capable anointed brothers to be his faithful and discreet slave...

Throughout the last days, the anointed brothers who make up the faithful slave have served together at headquarters. In recent decades, that slave has been closely identified with the Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses.”

    1925

Millions Now Living Will Never Die! (book, 1920) pp.89-90

“As we have heretofore stated, the great jubilee cycle is due to begin in 1925. At that time the earthly phase of the kingdom shall be recognized [...] Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews chapter eleven, to the condition of human perfection.”

    1935

The Watchtower, February 15, 1995, p. 19 par. 6 "Have No Fear, Little Flock"
"Logically, the calling of the little flock would draw to a close when the number was nearing completion, and the evidence is that the general gathering of these specially blessed ones ended

    in 1935."

    1975

The Watchtower, August 15, 1968 p.494 “Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?”
“WHAT about all this talk concerning the year 1975? Lively discussions, some based on speculation, have burst into flame during recent months among serious students of the Bible. Their interest has been kindled by the belief that 1975 will mark the end of 6,000 years of human history since Adam’s creation. The nearness of such an important date indeed fires the imagination and presents unlimited possibilities for discussion.”

The Watchtower, August 15, 1968 p.499 “Why Are You Looking Forward to 1975?”

Are we to assume from this study that the battle of Armageddon will be all over by the autumn of 1975?, and the long-looked-for-thousand-year reign of Christ will begin by then? Possibly....It may involve only a difference of weeks or months, not years.”

I am embarrassed to confess, I once believed these false prophecies.

Great compilation Vanderhoven7, this is a bookmarker for sure. The really frustrating part is that most of these quotes are not on WT Library, and hard copies are getting more and more rare as Hall's consolidate and 'book burnings' commence. The one currently available gem in here would be from the 1968 WT, the quote about how it may be weeks or months, but not years. This is still on WT Library 👍

"All lies! Apostate lies!" Brothers do not be misled! Apostates have gone to great lengths through modern technology and Satan himself to change the wordings of some of our old publications. Remember brothers, Jesus trusts us so you should too!

Thank you for the positive comments. On the subject of WT history, here are a few questions to challenge Witnesses with:

How well do you know your organization's history? (from recent to remote)

      a. How do you respond to the accusation that your religion has failed to protect children from pedophiles within your organization?

    • Do you think the two witness rule helps protect children from predators in the congregation?

    • Have you heard about the Australian Royal Commission investigations?

    • Do you know how many child sex abuse cases that the WTS in Australia failed to report to authorities since 1960? (over 1000)

    b. What are your personal thoughts about your religion being associated with the UN (wild beast of Revelation) as an NGO for approximately 10 years from 1991 to 2000? Do you know the WTS stated reason for joining? (to acquire a library card)

      c. Can you tell me why JWs with severe kidney or liver malfunctions were out of luck before 1980? (from 1967 to 1980 organ transplants = cannibalism)

    d. Do you know why JW hemophiliacs were frightened in the late 1970s? (1975-1978 hemophiliac preparations were banned)

    e. Do you know why Jehovah's Witnesses got so excited that they began selling their homes in the early 1970s? (It was for the same reason JW teens were not planning careers or even taking trade courses after high school; it was considered dangerous - no time-systems end so close)

    f. Do you know why Jehovah's Witnesses were more susceptible to disease than worldly people before 1952? (From 1927-1952 vaccinations were banned as a violation of the everlasting covenant)

    g. Do you know why JWs were advised not to marry or have children in the 30s & 40s? (Armageddon so close)

    h. Do you know why JWs were adding rooms onto their homes in the early 1920s? (because in 1926 they could call Abraham in Jerusalem and ask him to raise grandma)

    Hi Vanderhoven7,

On that first quote, I recognize the "Advertise . . ." part, but did not realize the quote included "1874" as part of it. The WT never quotes the 1874 part when they quote the "advertise, advertise, advertise" part.

Thanks for the list of 'famous last words.'

Me too. The first part is often quoted, the second part about 1874, never.

From 1876, Russell taught that the Parousia had taken place in 1874. He then designated the following 40 years to be the "Time of Trouble". This would terminate in 1914 with unprecedented peace under the auspices of the Jews.

Because of this, he named his periodical "Zion's Watch Tower" -- because of his Zionist beliefs, and he subtitled that same magazine as "Herald of Christ's Presence", because he was "heralding" that it had taken place in 1874.

For a while, Rutherford maintained his support for the return of the Jews. Likewise, until about 1930, he maintained the Parousia had taken place in 1874.

I collected and sorted many of these passages in:

    http://www.jwstudies.com/The_Watch_Tower_Society_Reveals_Itself.pdf (searchable)

When Russell's predictions regarding 1914 turned out to absolutely hopelessly wrong, Rutherford amended the offending words -- and kept selling the books. For example, "before 1914" was changed to "after 1914".

    I provide the evidences at:
