Masturbating Lowers Prostate Cancer Risk - Study
    Wed July 16, 2003 03:25 PM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Frequent masturbation, particularly in the 20s, helps prevent prostate cancer later in life, according to new research.

Australian scientists have shown that the more men masturbate between the ages of 20 and 50, the less likely they are to develop the disease that kills more than half a million men each year.

They suspect that frequent ejaculation has a protective effect against the cancer because it prevents dangerous carcinogens from building up in the gland.

"The more you flush the ducts out, the less there is to hang around and damage the cells that line them," Graham Giles, of the Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne, told New Scientist magazine on Wednesday.

In a survey of 1,079 prostate cancer patients and 1,259 healthy men, Giles and his team discovered that men who ejaculated more than five times a week in their 20s were a third less likely to develop an aggressive form of the disease.

The findings contradict previous studies which suggested that having a variety of partners or frequent sexual activity could increase the risk of prostate cancer by 40 percent.

But Giles said the earlier research concentrated on intercourse, whereas his study focused on masturbation. Infections caused by sexual activity could account for the different findings.

"Men have many ways of using their prostate which don't involve women or other men," he added.

    Only FIVE times a week????

Hot damn! Looks like I'm in "The really really really low, no really, might as well just say you will never get prostate cancer in your life" group!

Well, I have some tests to undergo tomorrow, nothing special.

But that's one thing I was told NOT to do.

    Go figure?!

I even remeber a j-dub trying to tell me that masturbation would give me prostate problems before .The way I see it is it is harder to get STD from that than shagging some skanky ho. woooooooooooo hoooooooooooo science has finally discoverd something that benefits me .

The reporters are sensationalizing this report; the Professor fuelled that a little. The reason stated, that "semen is a very potent and strong brew of lots of chemicals which, because of their biological reactivity, could be carcinogenic if left to lie around" doesn't exactly means that it's masturbation that does is, but rather, frequent ejaculation. The suggestion that masturbation equals ejaculation, no matter how frequent, is strong, perhaps too strong. While it may be a common thing, masturbation is not the only frequent way to get rid of that stuff.

This is a good study and I welcome it, I have always held that a good "flushing out" is good for men (and boys). I do still believe that morality and following a morale standard is important. But I have always felt that the WT goes beyond itself with medical advice, look back at all the quack medicine it promoted.

On masturbation (self abuse WT speak) it does not lead to Homosexuality (see youth book) nor make you blind. It does not make you neither a sexual pervert nor does it make you more of a sexual person, we are naturally sexual, and have the desire to be sexual, this is very normal. What I support is to get to know what your own feelings are and really understand yourself. Maybe sexual perverts masturbate excessively or not I don't know. What we can do as individuals is to know what is right and wrong sexually (who sets the standard?).

Being a Jehovah's Witness for many years up till now I had many guilt feelings along with worthlessness and being undeserving of Gods kindness (grace) everything being either wrong or right being told what is best and what is not good or to be avoided. Now that I have grown up (as free thinker) I look at everything with a critical view and decide whether or not to accept it or reject it on my own intelligence. I now no longer feel guilt about anything at all, maybe I feel remorseful or take the view of "well I did that but I was wrong" and move on.

I look forward to the WT's reporting of this medical theory!

Maybe Prostate cancer needs more attention as too many men are suffering and dying from this dreadful illness, I say look after your Prostate.

There actually was an article that linked their moral codex with avoiding prostate cancer!
*** g90 4/8 p. 27 The Prostate and Its Problems ***

    Bible's Moral Standard a Protection

Good prostate health seems also to relate to the Bible's high moral standard. All males would do well to note two principles in particular:

Faithful to wife: Hebrews 13:4 admonishes: "Let marriage be honorable among all, and the marriage bed be without defilement." Since infection of the prostate gland may be the result of venereal disease, promiscuous sexual activity may lead to prostate trouble as well as other problems.

Guarding one's thoughts: At Matthew 5:28 Jesus Christ counsels: "But I say to you that everyone that keeps on looking at a woman so as to have a passion for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Following Jesus' advice can contribute to good prostate health. How? When passion is aroused in a man, the prostate gland prepares for intercourse. Dr. Brosman writes that repeated episodes of arousal without accompanying ejaculation cause an accumulation of fluid in the prostate and the seminal vesicles and can lead to prostate trouble.

Today, many men seek sexual excitement by reading pornographic or sexually stimulating literature or by watching immoral movies or television programs. How much better to follow the apostle Paul's advice: "Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among you, just as it befits holy people."-Ephesians 5:3; see also Philippians 4:8.

Yes, the prostate is another marvel of our Creator. Without it, there would possibly be no procreation. So out of respect for his own body and God's design, every man ought to take steps to keep his prostate gland healthy.
Some months later there even was a Letter to the Editors where they had to clarify:
*** g90 8/8 p. 30 From Our Readers ***
Prostate Problems Your article on prostate problems (April 8, 1990) interested me, as my father needed prostate surgery. Although the article was very informative, the closing comments bothered me. You say that many men seek sexual arousal through pornographic literature. This insinuates that all men who have prostate problems are looking at films or literature of a pornographic nature.

    N. R., Federal Republic of Germany

We did not mean to imply that prostate problems are necessarily the result of unchristian conduct. Prostate problems are common among older men-including faithful Christians-for a number of reasons. But since unfulfilled sexual arousal appears to be involved in causing or at least aggravating the problem in some men, it was deemed appropriate to caution our readers against the snare of pornography.-ED.
