What do you do for a living ??? Would the elders make you quit your job ???

  I REALLY BELIEVE many parents in the borg do not want their kids to be overly succesful or more so want their kids to rely on them. (i have seen this many times).

  I've seen this myself.

  A JW relative of mine has managed to sabotage every positive thing his kids have tried to do with their lives; no working non-approved jobs that interfered with any meetings, no school, nothing. Although they have managed to graduate from highschool, they have zero social skills, no homemaking skills, don't know how to wash their own clothes, cook, have no concept of what or how they'll suppport themselves and no concept of money management, apart from asking mother may I. He tells them all the time that they shouldn't worry about working, the new system will be here soon; that they should look for high paying jobs that will give them OJT so that they can marry in the truth and pioneer. Both are in their mid-twenties and are resigned to staying at home indefinitely for the foreseeable future and anytime anyone tries to encourage them to grow beyond "sucking off the tit" he views as a threat to his authority.

  They're basically warm pieces of meat that he continues to use as tax deductions.

  What a waste......

  Well I still go (occasionally) to the Hall, I work full-time and I made sure that the elders know I'm getting my undergrad degree.......heh-heh-heh-heh......I know it pisses them off royally but they know better than to say anything to me. I'm seriously considering getting my degree in Religious Studies, simply because I know so frigging much already in that area. Hmmmm.........maybe I should ask my local elder body 'bout this.

  I know one elder who had a fantastic job at Ford; he was making $130,000/year, full benefits and he really enjoyed it. The Circuit Overseer came and told him that if he didn't quit the job (as he worked gasp! shift work) and find something else, he'd be removed as an elder. Unfortunately, he thought he should rely upon Jehovah this asshole of a CO, and so he quit the job. He's hated every job he's had since and he misses more meetings now than what he did when he worked for Ford.

  I'm a cake decorator, I write "happy birthday" on cakes (gasp!) and do all of the holiday cakes.. including santa and the us flag.. I'd definately be forced to quit if I was still in.

  The fact is that the WTS and its body of elders don't do a damn thing to help you create income. They, as we know, will hinder education, or anything else to help one become sucessfull.

  They don't pay our bills, so they can go worry about someone else. Even when I was involved, I would never have taken financial advise from the elders or the society.

  I work for the national broadcaster, so for a few weeks each December I put heaps of Christmas stuff to air. I used to put 'Songs of Praise' and other religious programs to air on Sundays. I worked for a cable TV operator and did a few months on the Australian Christian Channel. I never had the opportunity to work on the Adult channel, I was over qualified.

  An elder at my old clan was in the take away food business, family members were the only employees. He was partner with a non JW. He had meeting nights changed to suit his busy nights. When the clan split, his son went to the other cong, so that they wouldn't miss so many meetings.

  I am amazed at the umber of people that can work in jobs that relate to casinos or are right next to casinos and are okay. But, once you handle the money you have to give up that job.

  Freedom96, you hit the nail on the head. When it comes to personal decisions that affect my family and me, I don't listen to people telling me what to do because 'they don't put food on my table', I do. By the way, I tell them so. End of topic.

  This doesn't surprise me at all. I was studying to become a Medical Laboratory Technologist back in the early 80s. There was a lot of pressure to quit school and pioneer. People who knew me were APPALLED that I would be handling blood, and were highly offended that one of the internships (haematology) in my final year would be through the Canadian Red Cross. Also, my meeting attendance and service were starting to suffer due to the amount of homework and reading that I needed to do. When I looked after my "spiritual health" my grades would slip. When I would try to pick up my bootstraps at school, my "spirituality" would suffer. I even tried to make up for it by auxiliary pioneering during the winter and summer breaks between semesters, but that was never "good enough". Finally after two years, and just after I had worked for a JW all summer and registered for my third year of studies, the pressure was increased: my mother informed me that they couldn't afford to help me financially with schooling anymore. And conveniently, an hour or so later, my boss (whose wife happens to be a close friend of my mom's) phoned to offer me a full-time job. What I was led to believe as being "divine guidance and intervention" was a freakin set-up.

  It was another 12 years before I returned to school. It was the best thing I ever did for myself - aside from leaving the JWs.

  I am in the airforce ,so yes i think they might want me to change,of which there is stuff all chance!

  I've been lucky - a basic 9-5 job for over 20 years. The job is for local government though and one elder once inquired about any pressure to get involved in politics. There is none, so it was a non-issue, but I would not have left my job had it become an issue.

  My wife was talked to once about leaving a job which was employment for a "weak" jw. My wife later did find something else, but the job (cleaning) was not a good one anyway.

  As for any who work with jws, if you get df'd, they will find a way to get rid of you or cut you out of the business if you have an interest. One jw I know who was reproved (not df'd) was cut out of his partner's business.

  As for the other examples cited thus far, yes, it's ridiculous how they want people to give up good jobs and opportunities. And of course, they are big on cousel against working overtime. Funny how it seems though that so many elders are working such well-paying jobs. One jw guy I know is working some OT these days, and he told me that he'd better not hear anything from the elders in his Hall who drive BMWs and Mercedes are a quite well of while he has struggled for many years financially.
