Prison For Spitting On Cop 7-4-3
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma man arrested on suspicion of beating his wife faced year in prison and a fine. But when he spit in an arresting officer's face, he got a life sentence instead, officials said Wednesday.
John Carl Marquez, 36, was convicted of "placing bodily fluid upon a government employee," a felony that can carry a life sentence because of the possibility of transmitting a potentially deadly disease.
State judge April Sellers White sentenced Marquez this week even though Marquez and the officer tested negative for any communicable disease.
Marquez also was convicted of assaulting a police officer, and a jury recommended the maximum sentence because he had previous convictions.
Marquez, arrested several months ago, could have received one year in prison and a $3,000 fine for wife beating, according to the Creek County court clerk's office.
His lawyers said they plan to appeal.

Well, it seems he was only looking at a year for the domestic violence matter...so to get life for the spitting incident was a big hike...

You are right though, spitting is quite anti-social, and deserves life. He should be glad hes not going to the chair.

Oh I did not know the guy had done all that, then I guess we should really say that it was not the spitting that got him life but his record. With all that he is where he needs to be and for how long he got...

it was definitely his record that got him the sentence. I mean, it should have been reversed.....a year for the spitting, and life for the wife-beating, but this loser needs to be locked up. He's a sexual offender, cop beater, wife beater, and theif. Not much hope for this scoundrel.

Oh, okay, so this creep can beat the living hell out of his wife and he gets a YEAR?? But spitting on a cop gets him life..............gee, I wonder if the cop will be in therapy for the horrible stress this must have caused him.

While I'm glad this prick is going to jail for a long time, it's rather ridiculous that they view spitting on a cop as a far worse crime that domestic violence.
