Things just make more sense when we look at the stories in a symbolic or poetic way. It also seems like sin had a different meaning for Judaism in ancient times. At least that's what I have read so far.

Since the Eden narrative in Genesis is allegory/parable, the serpent's "secret identity" is moot, as far as I'm concerned.
