Why are JW's required to report Field Service Time?

Because businesses need a means to measure activity.

And The Watchower is in the business of running a Religion!

VMss is correct, the WTBTS is a business, and a tax exempt one at that. From my understanding of the law, in order to maintain the 501c3 tax exempt status on all the donations they recieve is they must prove the worth of how they give back to the community. The ONLY way they can do this is by showing those preaching hours on paper, hard copy, regularly in print.Proof of the preaching is their only qualifying contribution in order to keep the tax status.

In years past, pioneers would get discounts. In order to enforce who is pioneers and whether they do what they are supposed to to earn that discount, they required field service reports.

Tax purposes. It helps them justify their non-profit status.

As Ray Franz aptly pointed out in CoC, Field Service reports are a judging tool. Turn in enough time and you will receive "privileges" in the cong; don't turn in enough and you'll be judged as unworthy and weak. It is a powerful tool used to control the group.

    .

Additionally, the most important things in a JWs life (at least they should be the most important things), if they actually believe what the Bible says, cannot be reported on a timeslip, and for all intents and purpose, are irrelevant to the WT.

    .

No one ever is asked to report how much time they devoted to their children that month; how many charitable works they performed; how hard they worked to provide for their family; or how many things they did to enrich the lives of others, JWs and non-JWs alike. WT couldn't care less about those things so doesn't ask. What it does care about is how much of your life you devoted to advancing the interests of the corporation. Period.
