I'll second pr's guess- first thing that came to my mind. As to why the sheriff was wrong, I don't remember.

Now I'm standing in the corner with the Dunce Cap perched nicely on my head! I came back to see what the quote was from....and I NOW see that it WAS taken from a movie and not a TV show as I had read it wrong :o(
But I still LOVED Burt Reynolds in that movie!
