Warning: this post doesn't belong to me, I took it from Reddit and posted it here

    https://www.reddit.com/r/exjw/comments/107t131/2022_service_report_is_out/

    News
    • +0.4% growth in publishers globally

    • -1% publisher growth in the USA

    • Memorial attendance at 19,721,672 (-8% from last year and -6% from prepandemic 2019)

    • Total baptized 145,552 (-15% from last year and -52% from prepandemic 2019)

    • Total hours spent in field: 1,501,000,000 (+6% from last year and -28% from 2019)

    • Average Bible Studies: 5,666,996 (-4% from last year and -28% from 2019)

Also a reminder - the way publishers are counted has changed. Now no time reported is required to be a publisher (elders can decide that someone who claims to have been active in the month can be counted as a publisher without specific time reported). These recent changes themself would have contributed to some "growth" in the annual numbers.

Edit - some additional interesting points made in the comments:

    • About 400 more emblem partakers than last year (2% growth)

    • It takes 10,300 h for one baptism. For a 10h/month publisher that's... 86 years of preaching. Perhaps double that if you don't count children/born-in baptisms

    • Annual global population growth was 1.1% (vs 0.4% growth of society)

Edit 2 - some further comparisons to previous years

    Bible Studies:

    • -4% from 2021

    • -41% from 2019

    • -44% from 2016

    • -6% from 2019

    • -2% from 2016

    Memorial partakers

    • +2% from 2021

Trying to think what words best describe the numbers…..

    Disastrous? Catastrophic? Devastating? Gut-wrenching?

It was never easier to be seen as a “good” JW than during the pandemic. Attend meetings at home in a t-shirt and shorts & drinking beer….getting your field service time in while sitting at home, chatting with friends on Zoom while writing a line or 2 of a letter every 5 or 10 minutes…pioneer with no hour requirement whatsoever….and the numbers still went down or at best broke even.

Now, in person meetings and in person door to door are back at full speed. The hamster wheel is spinning again. But with easily 40% or more still avoiding the KH, and door to door met with less than gleeful enthusiasm, it is quite evident that for the majority of JWs, their heart just isn’t in it anymore. They’ll still keep hanging on, clinging to the hope that “very soon now” they’ll get their seaside mansion and see dead grandma again, but….

As BB King sang, “the thrill is gone”.

EDIT: another thought - now we see the reasons for the January “governing body update”. They cherry picked a couple of meager points & spun them as an “increase”, and lowered the pioneer requirement to literally half of what it was a generation ago, in a desperate attempt to get out ahead of this utterly depressing report. Let’s see how effective the message is…..

If you have 5% more people than 2016, doing 24% less work than in 2018- you ACTUALLY have a 28% decline in effort (field service hours) by your organization.

I wonder if they will really care about the decreases as long as the CA$H flow increases?

When was the last time there was negative growth in the US? Last time I can remember was in the late '70s.

We only see the Borg sustained by it's own birthrate. If that. Millennials and GenZ's have access to their iphones and tablets all the time and they can see through B.S. 24/7,,, whenever they want.
