Well I finally did it today, got to the dentist, they had to pull out 2 teeth and I'm in line for a "bridge" whatever that is...... My face feels sore, my head aches, and It feels like I got this huge crater in the back of my mouth......My dentist says its ok, I had too many teeth at the back anyway as my wisdom teeth have come through. Even still, I can't help but hate the dentist. They always say the same thing..."Pop yourself up on the chair" "This won't hurt" "You're gonna feel a bit of pressure here"..... and the classic "Sit up and have a rinse now".... YUCK!.....dribbling into a tissue! Still I aim to look like one of the Beegees once I got all my treatment done, not Maurice, maybe Barry or Robin. ..... ouch it hurts still!

Scooby, I think a "bridge" is like, they get a few hundred pounds of metal and build something like the Sydney Harbour Bridge in your mouth. So that every time you smile its like looking at a car crash.

    I could be wrong but...........

Hi Scooby...I empathize with you completely. Had to have a couple of teeth pulled a year ago and made sure that I had a prescription for Vicodin clutched in my hot little hand before he got to give me the shot. I'm such a wuss. He has to give me a shot to do a teeth cleaning!

White knuckles, sweaty palms and tears all the way.

Wariigal..... I'm a nurse but never heard of "Vicodin", of course I'll be happy to trial it for us english people on this occasion! I'm a wuss too, when that drill starts wurring!! Xena... the dental gods will smile on me shortly. (hopefully) Liquidsky, don't be sorry.....once I've got my teeth sorted, I'll slip in to a tight white jump suit outfit, open it to reveal a little chest hair, and have a smile just like the BeeGees..... Nun,....,nun...... nun.... Night fever night FEE-VER ......anyone? LOL. .....It aches!

A "Bridge" in this context, is a fixed prosthesis to fill in a gap where there are missing teeth. The two teeth on either side of the missing tooth (teeth) are strengthened using porcelain crowns. They become the anchor, or abutment to the bridge. A "pontic", or fake tooth fills in the gap.

In the USA, a three unit bridge can be between $1400 and $3000, depending on the materials used and the quality of the laboratory which fashions the device. Ask about the composition...is it porcelain fused to precious metals? Do they have a replacement policy if it fails within a year or two?

There are many good reasons to fill in the spaces of missing teeth (besides looking like a prize-fighter). Teeth tend to drift or move into the empty space. The opposing teeth may grow longer as they tend to do when there is nothing hitting them when you bite or chew.

Make sure before you spend a lot of money if your dentist does a lot of this kind of thing and if he/she does good quality work. A well-made bridge should last most of your life if your gums remain healthy. (Keep up with regular dental cleanings or you'll loose all your teeth.)

Another alternative is an implant. You can consult with an implant specialist to find out if this is feasible. The cost will likely by more (at least it is in this country), but at least you will not be grinding down healthy abutment teeth to have the same result. Implants are really cool: a metal post is placed in dental bone and bone material is actually grafted on. Then, a tooth is placed that fits into the post, like a screw. It's very high-tech.

See, aren't you glad you asked? What? You didn't???

Thanks Wasasister for your detailed stuff about what is what. I already decided to go for the implants once my dentistry treatment has finished. You are right its expensive, but don't think I want the "bridge" treatment. I asked my dentist about it today and she said she would be happy to do that for me once the bone had settled down, although I might need "augmentation", I just smiled and said yes, whilst clamping a wad of gauze in my mouth! (like I fully understood what she was on about!) I'm sure it'll all work out ok. and I'll end up with Bobby Dazzlers come what may! Thanks anyway!. Scott xx
