JW's in the cinema

There is this funny anecdote I remember from my JW days that I would like to tell:

In the mid seventies there was a French movie released over here about
the story of David & Goliath, and some JW's of our congregation wanted to see it.
Now this movie of which I forgot the title was nothing special but as is usual
in cinemas some trailers of future releases are shown before the main movie.
One of these trailers happened to be one for a porn-movie,(It was for one of
those Tiroler soft porn movies which were very popular in the seventies.)
So before the dubs could watch their bible movie they had to sit this one out
    or leave the theatre.
Some JW's had already been to a previous showing and I can clearly remember that
this was talked about alot at that time, and a friend of mine clearly did *not*
walk out as he was able to recount in detail what was being shown in the
    trailer or preview.
Maybe it was too cold outside the theatre, but I suspect many JW's chose to watch,
    I know I did :-)
Anyone else who has stories about JW's in the cinema?

While I was in my mid teens I went to see my first "R" rated movie, "The Last Boy Scout" with one of my witness friends. Right before the movie, we came out to get some drinks and popcorn and low and behold, there was an elder standing right beside the door as we came out. At first I thought it was a cardboard cut out for an upcoming movie, he was just standing there so still with his arms crossed. I shook his hand with a sinking feeling in my gut. He was there with his wife and kids, so he didn't make a scene of it there, but the next time I saw him at the meeting I got pulled into the back room. He said I'm going to give you the benifit of the doubt, I saw you go into an "R" rated movie the other night, maybe you were just saying hi to some poeple you knew? I said "maybe not" and left it at that. He talked to me about it a bit, but I was already on restrictions for having had a girlfriend at the age of 15, which didn't go over very well either, so I just got another tongue lashing.

My brother who is still a witness tells me that walking out of the theatre if they deem something questionable is the popular thing to do. He told me that some girls that he knew had recently walked out of "Anger Management" because it was hurting their conscience. I imagine it's kind of funny seeing some young witnesses just sitting on benches outside the theatre for a few hours waiting for their friends with consciences that weren't so puny.

Some of my relatives, who had read the Harry Potter books got called into the back room before the movie was about to come out and told directly that it would be best that they did not go see the movie for fear it would stumble some of the brothers. I took my brother to Lord of the Rings when it came out and I asked why his witness girlfriend couldn't come with him. He said that watching Lord of the Rings was frowned upon, so he didn't want alot of witnesses to know about him seeing it. Just a few of the things that added to the final straw that broke the camel's back for me.

I remember going to see a PG-13 movie with a group of Jdubs when I was about 15 years old. The MS servant that was with us had us all walk out of the theatre.

The movie was about a family with a young teenager I believe. I think a joke was made about masturbation. I cannot even remember what movie it was.

One of the older sisters that was with us was so proud of him for making us all leave and waste our money on a movie we couldn't finish watching.

I don't even know what this lady was doing with us. The age group was 15 - 25 and then her a 45ish holier-than-thou-self

I am still making up for all the movies I never watched because they were rated R.

The JWs I knew would circumvent the whole problem by

    a) Going to a theater in another county

    b) Wait and rent it to view at home

    c) Watch it on cable

I was astonished how many elders rented R-rated movies to view with a group of friends. They would "speed up" through the bad parts (how did they know unless they had those parts?).

These same self-righteous ones that would leave the theater, were the type to sit around and rip to shreds the reputation of some innocent brother and sister and not see this was worse than 60 seconds of a bad joke or a few swear words.

I was a Reg pioneer when I went to see my first rated R movie. I was so nervous but I enjoyed the movie too much to leave, (Sleeping with the Enemy). Then my plunge into corruption continued with "The Bodyguard." Since then I've seen loads of R movies and some of the others frowned upon like Harry Potter (I've read all the books! Love 'em) and Lord of the Rings. At my last 'gathering' a young elder complained bitterly about how Satan is misleading people by the demonic Lord of the Rings, well I spoke up and said, 'What's wrong with it? It's a great movie and I can't wait for the next one!' He couldn't tell me specifically what was wrong with it, then confessed that he and his wife saw it! I couldn't help but laugh. Theyreally need to get a grip, it's entertainment and you know what? It hasn't lead me to an immoral lifestyle and demons don't make stuff fly around in my house. Amazing how the GB choke the living out of life. - Victorian Sky

It was funny to be at a "get together" watching a movie, and if a "questionable" part came on, or excessive swearing, nude shot, or whatever came on, you better make it known that you disapproved.

You could cough, make a comment, change the subject, get up, look away, close your eyes, etc.

The movie,TITANIC,was frowned on by the circuit overseer,he said that the nude painting scene and the the fornication scene in the foggy car was taboo for the friends.

    How did he know this?

The district overseer specifically mentioned Titanic from the stage at one of our circuit assemblies. I just figured he was jelous because he never got to paint a naked woman.

Seems the JWs just can't wait to flaunt their weak spiritual makeup.
