About 14 years ago, the elders manual laid out what "brazen conduct" could be.
"10. Though this is not an exhaustive list, brazen conduct may be involved in the following if the
wrongdoer has an insolent, contemptuous attitudeFurther discussion at that time: https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/200645/what-brazen-conduct-according-new-shepherd-flock-god-book
Balaamsass, you and your wife, 3rd Gen, should write a book! I would buy it.
Biahi..thanks! What would I title it? "Random musings of an old ass and a patient grandma"?
The MAIN reason why anyone is DFd, has little to do with the sin, but how contrite the sinner is. If they recognize their wrongdoing and want to restore their Relationship With Jehovah™ and beg the Elders™ to help them do so, they will likely get off with Private Reproof™ if nobody else was involved in the sinning (so, smoking, drunkenness, for example) or Public Reproof™ if there were other individuals involved (sexual intimacy before marriage, theft, embezzlement) PROVIDED that it has not become "public knowledge".
If it involves CSA, the parents are responsible for reporting incidents to the Secular Authorities™, but it has historically been discouraged so as avoid Bringing Reproach On Jehovah™. If it goes to a Judicial Committee™, the perp usually denies all allegations and the child/parents are labelled as Slanderers™ and treated like the scum of the earth. I would hope that this pattern would have changed by now, but pedophiles are notoriously good at sucking up to Elders™ and avoiding any restrictions being imposed on their ability to connect with targeted kids.
Let's not forget disfellowshipping in absentia for insubordination.
Elders who refuse Watchtower orders on principle or conscience.
Refusing to perjure oneself in court and lie to authorities when the Watchtower stands to lose money. Some famous cases involving child abuse. JW elders were disfellowshipped without trial from NY in secret meetings for refusing to lie. Bently comes to mind.
Elders refusing to turn over Kingdom Halls or Congregation bank accounts to Watchtower. Menlo Park.
Let's not forget "suing your brother in court," ie, taking Watchtower to court to force borrowed money to be returned.
Joining the military would result in "Disassociation" which is technically different than "Disfellowhipping" although the end result is pretty much the same
This was the workaround to avoid a repeat of 1918
In support of BalaamsAss comment: Also can be df'd for "brazen conduct." WT definition: "
From the Greek a·selʹgei·a, a phrase pertaining to acts that are serious violations of God’s laws and that reflect a brazen or boldly contemptuous attitude; a spirit that betrays disrespect or even contempt for authority, laws, and standards. The expression does not refer to wrong conduct of a minor nature.--Galatians 5:19, 2 Peter 2:7" "When a person is guilty of brazen conduct, a judicial committee will handle the matter. Uncleanness includes various types of wrongdoing. Depending on the seriousness of the situation, some matters involving uncleanness might need to be handled by a judicial committee in the congregation." Remain in God's Love page 249. Basically ignoring the elders.. "loose conduct is grounds for reproof and possible disfellowshipping from the Christian congregation" "When trying to identify loose conduct, elders should look for brazenness, wantonness, filthiness, shamelessness, and what is shocking to public decency."
