I can relate to the whole family thing and the lack of ties - no sisters & parents topped with NO extended family except those still back in UK (save for my dear grandmother - now deceased) for 20years has taken its toll......
However we do TRY..one sister (now DF`ed)and her fella and one of her children will come and over Xmas day...with my kids..mmmm poor family gathering but its the best we have..and for me...a benefit on other years where it was me and my kids....
I agree with the whole decorations thing altho I do make an effort and try to enjoy it as much as I can even with the whispers and undertones remaining that tell me its all commercial profitability......

I guess we were bad witnesses. We always made a big deal of our anniversary. We'd wrap presents for the kids, cook a special dinner, really make a family day of it. I don't know that it made up for Christmas but we sure had fun. The two older children (the youngest really doesn't remember anything about being a dub) say it was a weird way to grow up, but since we let them do a lot of things, they weren't traumatized by it.

Refiner's, you and I are usually on the same page, but on this one, I have a different outlook. I think giving and receiving gifts is a real nice thing to do. This year is a lean one for my three adult children and me. We have agreed on very modest gift giving this year. For us it is not related to commercialism, but what we feel comfortable doing. I hope you would try it just once, if only for one or two other people close to you. Who knows, you might like it.
