Just when I thought it was safe...

    to go upstairs:

Ok, the weirdest thing in the world, at least in MY world, just
happened!!! I'm downstairs in my room, when I hear all these thumps
and bangs coming from upstairs. Now, the kids are at school, the
dogs are outside...only me and the cat are loose in the house,
right? So I can't figure out what it is the cat is doing...until,
all of a sudden, it hits me. What if the gerbil (Stan) has somehow
gotten out of his cage and the cat (Arwen) is after him??!!

In panic now, I shoot up the stairs and there is what I most feared!
The gerbil and the cat, locked in mortal combat on the landing!! My
heart is racing, my legs are jelly, and I'm screaming at the cat: NO
KITTY!! (effective huh? but hey, I was scared!) I just know that
Stan is probably already mortally wounded because the bumps and bangs
had been going on for a couple of minutes before I went up to
investigate. I wade into the fray to rescue Stan...but wait! STAN
is attacking the cat! Not the other way around...the cat is doing her
damnedest to get away from him, but every time she takes a step, he
darts at her and JUMPS ON HER!!! She's freaking out, I'm freaking
out, and the bloody gerbil won't stop!!! I have never in my life
seen anything like this. We've always been afraid of what might
happen if the gerbil got loose and the cat found him. I had no idea
    he'd be the aggressor!

Anyway, I grabbed the cat and put in her in a bedroom and then tried
to catch the gerbil...but then he started jumping on me! I am
embarrassed to admit it, but I was jumping around, yelling and waving
my arms, and trying not to step on him...and I was too scared to just
grab the little bugger! He finally ran AWAY from me (Thank DOG!)
and, to make a long story short, I managed to get him back in the
cage, without actually touching him, mind you. Jesus H. Christ! My
heart is STILL pounding, and my hands are still shaking...somebody
give me a valium...I need it after my Great Gerbil Encounter.

BTW...the cat is now locked in HER bedroom, the gerbil is locked in
the bathroom, with his cage secure, and towels stuffed under the door
(just in case) and they're bloody well staying that way until the
    kids come home!!!!!

That's hysterical! At least you have a great story to tell now - once you stop shaking! Animals are amazing, and totally unpredictable.

ROTFLMAO!!! That's is the funniest thing I have read in a long, long time!!!

safe4kids, did you get bitten? Those little critters have a nasty bite, as I found out the hard way.

Wow - Ninja gerbil!!! Or had you let him watch the Yoda scene, in the last StarWars flick? Maybe he wanted to be a Jedi, like so many of the posters, around here.

Glad you managed to return the house to some semblance of normality - LOL.

My wife woke up one night because she heard the geribil screaming. She found it in the hallway being batted back and forth by the cat. He had gotten out of his cage. Not sure if the cat helped him out. She managed to rescue the geribil, but he was never the happy, go lucky little fellow that he had been. Your geribil was quite brave, but demonstrated a common reaction of all animals, including us. They attack out of fear.

Simon, would you be open to awarding the gerbil a light saber and conferring upon him/her the title of Jedi ?? He/she has earned this and more.

Ascot Of the 3 of us, I think I came the closest to having a heart attack...I think I need to lie down with a cool cloth on my forehead and a box of fudge-covered mint oreos within easy reach

Richard No, I didn't get bitten, thank goodness. I think the gerbil was actually enjoying himself! Besides, I would have had to actually touch him in order to get bitten...I don't think he could bite thru my pajama's when he was climbing up my legs

LB Geez, I think we BOTH are...how humiliating.

LittleToe Normality?? In this house??! Hehehe, I wouldn't go THAT far...but at least I think I'm safe from attack at the moment.

OMG That is SOOO funny! I'm going to email your story to my sister, she'll get a big kick out of it

I had cats and gerbils too. One day my friend was staying over and she screamed OMG V you have a rat in the bedroom! It was one of my gerbils. Out for a while too... was leading my cats on a merry chase under the bed and into crevices they couldn't fit into... they were freaking out but they were NOT attacking it, they were just having fun chasing it around. I laughed so hard after my initial panic (I too thought I'd rescue a bloody mangled body).

The cats had learned a healthy respect for the gerbils as when their noses got too close to the bars they got nipped!

    LMAO

*LOL* safe4adults...that's was funny as hell..That's what you get for not having hedgehogs instead of gerbils..
