I re-read 1984 a few weeks ago, and the parallels are extraordinary. The fact that he wrote it about socialism/communism and not the witnesses tells me that dictatorial systems are all pretty much the same: use your reasoning skills to see we are right, you know we are right, if your reasoning tells us we are wrong, remember that you can't trust mere reasoning, and finally, independent thinking is dangerous and works against the paradise!!

From the research that Blondie has posted, it seems up till 73 that there was a probation period. And then in 73 there wasn't. So other than these "question box" answers, was this change in procedure ever outlined for everyone to know? Or were these "question box" answers the official new procedure? Most organizations whether religious, governmental, business, etc that have a major change in policy will do so with a memo, letter or some other official form. To announce the change in policy by way of a side article in the company newsletter(Kingdom Ministry) is weak.

Besides, what changed other than the terminology? You were either repentant(reproved) or unrepentant(DF'd). If repentant, it was either public reproof or private reproof. Restrictions are placed. Before you were on probation(being watched). Now you have restrictions(being watched).

If a probationary period was in line with the scriptures, are they now not in harmony with the scriptures? Or vice versa? If vice versa, are apologies warranted to those who were unscripturally under probation?

Boggles the mind after a while, huh?

Yup. I was snitched on by one of my so-called best friends. Talking about things we did in the past and I mentioned something to him that I had done before I was even married. I should have noticed that he wasn't too specific about his past misdeeds but I considered him a buddy and didn't really take notice. I had told my wife years before and it was no big deal. I get a call out of the blue from an elder in his hall telling me I have to talk to the elders in my hall. Seems my "friend's" conscience was bothering him and he fessed up to the elders. Didn't even have the balls to talk to me first. I ended up in a meeting with my elders. Instead of the normal 3 elders I had 5 of them. Ended up losing my priviledges over it. This was in the mid 90's and nothing was announced in the hall. Fun eh?

I would never snitch. My ex-wife however, after being divorced for years, still tries to snitch on me, though I have been inactive for years. She would love nothing more than to try to get be df'd. Great Christian attitude huh?

Incense_ Yep those are chilling parallels .. I do have the book by the Bottings that deals with the WT and 1984, havent read it though.

Undercover. good post! nothing but the terminology has changed! In saying that they used the same terminology when I was put on probation, they told me I was on probation and yep I was watched for 6 months then taken off.

    Wolf...

Seems my "friend's" conscience was bothering him and he fessed up to the elders.

What a self rightous nut! That gets up my nose, and for them to dish out punishment for something that had happened so long ago! Even the NWT says "Love doesnt keep a record of wrongs"
