My daughter just ogt a tourist brochure from a JW-owned agency in Illinois touting pilgrimages to the GB's $50-million retirement Valhalla. It's laughable that they're able to sell this fiasco to the friends as an ``educational center.''

What sort of graduates is this specious ``education center'' turning out? If the current quality of their literature is any example, it can hardly be said to specialize in Journalism 101. None of the professors there appear ever to have understood why self-respecting writers are required to give attribution to their quotes from outside sources, or to check facts thoroughly before publishing and provide bibliographies whenever possible.

And what does the shallow, specious exposition of what passes for WT dogma say about what JW undergrads are being fed at their Theology and Biblical Exegesis lessons? Then too, Chronology 101 class must be a real corker!

Sorry, but make mine Princeton, please! Or even Slippery Rock U.!

They do "Biblical Exegesis"????? Struth, that's something I'd like to see. I wonder why they don't do it at any congregation meetings? Could it be that they know there are very few, if any, actual Bible scholars amongst the local elders?

yes they call it an Ed Centre-

they have a place that has some 2000+ folks living there and they turn our 60 Gilead students a year- they call in the COs-DOs- Branch committee folks once or twice a year- hell they could rent a hotel for that-

This is indeed a retirement home for the long time bethel members- all the GB have two homes one in brooklyn and one of at patterson-

i recall talking to some sisters who worked in drafting while i was at bethel and they often talked about how they could save money if they cut out some of the fancy stuff like the water fountains and all the glass and chrome and just went more conservative

problem was some of the engineers and archictects were so excited about being able to work on THE HOUSE OF GOD- SHE Mentioned that many times these guys who were professional outside of bethel - now that they were inside wanted to as she put it MAKE THEIR MARK on the design, layout and construction as if they were padding their resume-

one guy she often mentioned talked about how when solomon temple was being built NO EXPENSE WAS SPARED

she mentioned how it was as if there were 2 CAMPS

one group wanted to hold down cost the other felt that THIS IS THE HOUSE OF GOD give god the best-

sorta like building a local hall many times

This rural Shangri-La has further isolated them from reality-- and Society at large, which may explain how grotesquely insular and self-absorbed they've become, wrapped in their cocoon. At least in Brooklyn, reality intruded upon them with greater frequency, as they were compelld to walk the streets of the city and to ride the busses and subways.

    Good points Room 215.

I visited Patterson around '95 or '96. It was very saddening for me. Sorta made me feel like like the GB and company feel like they are so great and deserve only the best of everything. But, I put it all on "the shelf".

It was especially disheartening in light of the fact that many JW's from West Virginia were unable to come to the DC's that were held in Columbus OH (where I live) because they couldn't afford the trip. And here's the NY crime bosses living like kings.

This 'temple building' spirit of sparing no expense was extended to Assembly Halls.

At Henrietta, in NY, they put in expensive polished marble for the floors, disregarding
practical objections that it shows streaks and can be slippery to walk on.

I think some sister broke a hip or something because they ended up covering the expensive
    marble with carpeting.

In addition to this, I was sometimes surprized at the prices charged for some items
from companies that brothers insisted on using.

does anyone have pictures or a link to images of this place. I've heard plenty but images would be great

so other than an "Education Centre" what is it for?

Does it have a bomb shelter and supplies to get them through the end?
