Also the fact jurors aren't compensated, (not even minimum wage just a few dollars a day, not enough to even pay for their lunch), I'm sure has an impact on cases. How many jurors just go with the flow to end the case sooner, etc?
Have you ever been called for Jury Duty? before or after registering to vote?

I registered to vote the first day I was eligible. A group of us went. They changed the age from 21 to 18 because so many 18 year olds were dying in Viet Nam. Altho people complained about jury duty, I could not wait. I was called. If I were not planning to go to law school, I would have seen the presiding judge to get excused. Anyone with any education beyond high school was disqualified. If you worked for an insurer, good bye. Divorced? Don't warm the seat. There was an exciting obscenity trial that was covered by the press. Jimmy Breslin, Norman Mailer, and John Leonard were going to testify. If you heard of the name Shakespeare or Henry Miller, get moving. Dummies were left.

i'VE NEVER voted nor registered, but for the first time I was called for jury duty early this year.
The Department of Motor Vehicles began using their information for purposes of jury pools.
I spent about 6 hours at the Court House and was eager to be selected.
No such luck.
Interesting experience, however.

Some employers pay you for jury duty, whatever you would have received on the job. Some areas pay $40 for jury duty (if employer pays you you must turn this back).

If you are salaried and overtime exempt, your employer must pay you for jury duty after the first day. If he does not, he has compromised your exempt status and is liable for all the overtime you've ever worked.
Few employers are that stupid once they realize it.

In California jurors are selected from DMV records.
My last call up was a civil case. Auto accident. I was promptly excused after I stated I was a bit upset that the two parties had not settled this already, and would be tempted to punish whoever refused to settle since the jury were the only ones being asked to "work" for free in the courtroom.

Greetings: Yep, I was summoned for jury duty many times, before I registered to vote. MOST of the instances were of the "call-in" kind, in which I had to call a phone number each day, to see if my group was needed or not. Very few of the times have I ever had to present myself at a local courthouse---maybe two times that THAT happened. The time that I had to present myself at local courthouse was back in late August of 2007. That ws interesting. The case was a criminal case, in which the defendant was accused of resisting arrest which resulted in injury to the polilce officer. There was one lady who was chosen to sit in the "potential jurist" box. She stated---and I kid you not---that she was a devout Christian, and that her "God" would speak to her heart and mind, and personally tell her if the defendant was guilty or not guilty. Neither the public defender, nor the prosecuting attorney wanted her on the jury! Dismissal!!!! So, next time that you are called in to a courhouse---pull the "devout Christian" card, if you don't want to serve. It might work!

They use several databases. It is important to have a diverse jury pool. I have yet to meet a person who was not disappointed.
