Patent seeking has less to do with existing signage of other companies and more to do with protecting one's turf from subsequent players mimicking one's signage.
All religious groups seek to have trade marked signage - even in the naming of their literature.

The WTS have this to say in their latest Watchtower so I think they are lying about having trademark protection:
April 2018 Watchtower Study Edition, Pages 30 & 31
As is clearly stated in those Terms, no one is permitted to “post artwork, electronic publications, trademarks, music, photos, videos, or articles from this website on the Internet...”
By securing copyright and trademark protection, we have a legal basis to prevent such misuse.
