Greetings to all who surf shark-infested internet waters.

After I was hit by ransomware the other day, I did research on so-called safe sites. It seems more and more sites are being infected deliberately by hackers. I went to a legit-looking site on a famous artist and -- WHAM! -- my iMac was locked by an FBI drive-by scam. PAY UP OR ELSE!

Would you please share what you know on safe surfing. Even numerous legitimate sites have become compromised.

    Thanks!

One tip I learned - In your browser settings, click this:

Ask where to save each file before downloading

That's the box to click in Google Chrome, under advanced settings. There should be a similar option with any browser.

Then, if you click on something malicious that does an "Instant Download", you have a safeguard in place.

Also, always download to a flash drive! :)

There is a Linux distribution built specifically for what you are concerned about

Keep your anti-virus and firewall up to date. Also update your operating system frequently.

There is no need to pay for any of these. I use Microsoft's own version and have never had any problem.

Not to offend. You probbalby don't go to porn sites but they will get you.

I use kaspersky anti virus. This runs always.

And malware bytes. Run this every day or at least every week.

If you go off the beaten path, something will try to get you. Then you have to be careful

    not to infect yourself.

If you go to MSN.com the main page seems to be safe but when you start clikcing on the pages off the main page it might get dangerous.

Craigs list and ebay seem safe if you stay on the main page.

You tubes safe on the main page

    google main page.

wikpedias safe I have gone to web pages listed on wikpedia with no problem.

    Amazon. safe

    Facebook safe

Legitimate businesses. I go to home pages for soccer clubs, music stores, autoparts stores.

You never know when something will get you.

You kind of have to have an eye for con men.

A trait many Jw's are deficient in.

If something sounds to good to be true and you go to the site advertising it.

You are probably going to get stung.

You are very welcome. IT used to be my field, before I got sick. :))

Agree strongly with Cofty re the freeware. Linux can be a bit difficult for the average user (like me, hehe), do you agree, CAA? I would like to use it myself, and my techie friends both recommend, but admit that as an user-friendly OS, Linux still has a way to go.

Also, everything James Brown said. Be careful, though, when clicking on Google images - that's how my AVG got infected.

Here's a heads-up to you or anyone who gets a problem and needs help. There is a website, www.majorgeeks.com, that is just that. A site with MAJOR geeks, that helps people. They give clear instructions, and know their stuff as good as the best hacker. They cleared my system of a fierce malware that was embedded in my (licensed) AVG - which is rated as good as Kaspersky - last year. No anti-malware or firewall is completely safe.

I am not up on the latest odds and bits of IT technology (it moves so fast and has left me far behind), but can say with absolute certainty that the above site can be trusted. They also have lots of advice and forums re security issues and other problems. They, too, agree with Cofty re the freeware.

Oh, and on Facebook, subscribe to Facecrooks ... they give advice and tips on Facebook safety, and alert you to all the latest scams.

    Happy surfing!

You are right Gentoo and slackware can be very challenging for a typical PC user. Ubuntu is pretty easy to learn out of the box and has alot of security features that are great. However, you are right it does take some time to make most distros worth using useable.
