Before seeing this post I never even heard of a co that lived to 70. They all dropped dead in their 60's, most likely from the strain of co-ing on their health.

I had heard rumors about this. Thanks for the confIrmation. How old was the apostle john when he retired?

I'm suprised it isn't younger, think how bad it looks to have old people preaching that the end is right around the corner.

The rebellion will begin at the top. It will be because of things like thiS and not teachings. For example, if you go to mts and then get cancer on your assignment you're screwed. They won't care for you. So unloving. Funny how the apostles wrote letters to the congregations not telling them to do more service time, but instead telling them to share more and help the poor.

It makes sense. The last thing the WTBTS wants is to be responsible for medical or sheltered care for these ones & there is always the danger that one will make a claim against the society saying that they are an employee rather than a volunteer.

The society provide next to nothing help for retired COs & their wives. Sometimes they will give them honorary special pioneer status & dump them in a needy congregation somewhere , where the local brothers are expected to find them accommodation. Their best bet is that some contact they have will set them up with a part time job - a few retired COs work for the JW run printing supplies companies in the UK.

The difficulty for the WTBTS is that there are very few young COs coming up through the ranks. A middle aged childless pioneer couple I know have done some occasional substitute work but the wife is absolutely against the idea of full time circuit work. Most potential wives hate the idea.

There are businesses that legally require employees to separate from employment at 70.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_retirement

Mandatory retirement is generally unlawful in the United States, except in certain industries and occupations that are regulated by law, and are often part of the government (such as military service and federal police agencies, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

From the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Website:

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age. The ADEA's protections apply to both employees and job applicants. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because of his/her age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment, including hiring, firing, promotion, layoff, compensation, benefits, job assignments, and training.

From the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations discussing the Age Discrimination in Employment Act:

...one of the original purposes of this provision, namely, that the exception does not authorize an employer to require or permit involuntary retirement of an employee within the protected age group on account of age,
...an employer can no longer force retirement or otherwise discriminate on the basis of age against an individual because (s)he is 70 or older. [ 15 ]
    Certain professions [ edit ]

    • Pilots: the mandatory retirement age of airline pilots is 65. The Fair Treatment for Experienced Pilots Act (Public Law 110-135) went into effect on December 13, 2007. [ 16 ]
    • Air traffic controllers: Mandatory retirement age of 56, with exceptions up to age 61
    • Federal law enforcement officers, national park rangers and firefighters: Mandatory retirement age of 57, or later if less than 20 years of service [ 17 ]
    • Florida Supreme Court justices: The Florida Constitution establishes mandatory retirement at age 70.
    • New Jersey Supreme Court also established mandatory retirement at age 70.
    • Maryland Constitution establishes mandatory retirement age of 70 for Circuit and Appellate Court judges.
    • New Hampshire Constitution - Article 78 sets the retirement of ALL Judges and sheriffs at age 70.

    I'm surprised at that decision.

Person who are over 65 finally get FREE HEALTHCARE in the USA. It's the 50-65 yo "employees" who are costing the WTS so much in healthcare costs. Plus, if the individual did any kind of real work (for wages) before going full-time then they would also qualify for receiving Social Security at age 62. Typically a minimum of $600/mo(+/-).

As long as these older ones are in good health, they are the least liability!

I fondly recall a CO we had who was at least in his 60s and went on to serve well into his 70s who was in great health and was a good, kindly, loving CO. Now THAT may be why they want to dump the old guys. They behave like loving grandparents instead of Company Men.
