That line about JDubs giving their kids presents throughout the year is just their comeback line when folks ask them about not celebrating Christmas. I'm just glad my dad wasn't in while I was growing up, I have fond memories of going to friends and relatives houses for dinner for the holidays and I did get gifts. I guess I'm one of the lucky born-ins.

A sore point with me.....sure I bought presents for the kids.

If you count those toys left over from xmas, on boxing day!!

Evidently ...the day after was OK to buy toys!

Ya the day after xmas, when all the excitement was over,

a complete let-down for little kids. Oh, and the wrapping

paper ... not so much!!! If they were wrapped ... made sure

the paper was not red or green ...see those are really baaadd

colours in the winter!

All through the year ...oh ya gee time goes sooo fast, oh was

that your birthday last week? Let's go to the store, you can pick

out something!

My parents wedding anniversary is in December and growing up we had a large celebration every year. I never felt I was missing anything.

As a born in I rarely got toys and if I did they were from Garage Sales. Maybe one new toy a year if that. And yea I had to use that tired old phrase all the time in school and looking back at it I was lying.

Band on the Run

Oh, creative fib time. I thought I could pass for normal. The kids probaly remembered earlier Christmases or perhaps some Witness related absence. While they were totaling their Christmas loot, I chimed in. It is funny b/c my clothing came from a discount store that I thought was elegant. It was the same as Wal-Mart quality but in my mind, it was cool. Once started, I went whole hog on toys. If there was a commercial on children's TV, I had it home. We also had a skiing trip.

The neighborhood kids wanted to see my toys and brand new clothes. We were in the lower grades so they just invited themselves over. Besides the lack of toys and clothes, I had to cope with my father being present. It was some lesson in never telling falsehoods. I told my mother that I lied to them. Maybe she could purchase some items. She had no money. My classmates told me of their disappointment. Besides the clothing and toys, they were insulted b/c my mom did not serve them a big Italian dinner. It was years before I allowed any more classmates into my home.

As for ski trips. some classmate broke her leg. She had a cast and crutches. Her family was skiing in Vermont when it happened. Well, through the neighborhood intelligence committee, I found out that she actually broke her leg waiting for a city bus.

My parents were cheap but i dont think they got much growing up either andd so maybe thats just they way it was. Not celebrating holidays made it easy to then forget about us kids. we as a family probably over do it, my kids have way to much and dont apretiate it.

It is a canned lie that was probably pantomimed in many a drama, plus inserted in the lines of many a talk outline. It's funny that the phrase is almost word for word amongst us all. It was a definite scripted catchphrase straight from headquarters to branches all over the world!!! How sinister!!!

I saw kids hardly get a thing, unless it was as a reward for doing something the society wanted like pioneering. Then they were rewarded with nice ministry bag. Even a boiled sweet had to be earned by answering up or placing a mag. A simple biro for kids to scribble with during meetings was treated like it was gold.

The tightest group of people I have even come across even towards their own families. Material meaness to the extreme is all that I saw.

“Jehovah’s Witnesses give presents all year round.” Yup, I made the same proclamation for years to try and sound normal to others not “in.” 2 times growing up, we had kid’s parties. Those 2 times were really special and memorable for me because it only happened twice. We were really poor when I grew up. I would get toys but most of the time it was from yard sales and thrift shops. Same with my clothes. My mom did the best she could with what she had. But man do I hate the fact that I used the same lie once I grew up as I heard when I was growing up.

My wife and I along with her family and one other family from the hall had “family gift night” but it only lasted 1 year. We planed on doing it every year but it didn’t last.
