Kate is right that giving toy guns to kids to play with here in the UK is seriously frowned on. I was not allowed things like swords either though my son has loads of toy swords and it's never been an issue. I know many other boys that have swords. This is the same amongst elders and MS but there are some that do not give them to their kids.
Paintballing has always been pretty much a no-no although I have known groups of lads that have done it. If an elder or MS were to go on it then they would absolutely get in trouble for it and quite probably be taken off. We had a demo at our CA the other week where paintballing was used as a specific example and of course the two young brothers decided it would be better not to participate so they are obviously reinforcing the message now.
In terms of the wider issues of guns there is a difference between the UK and other places, certainly the US.
It is legal to own a gun however this is essentially restricted to air rifles and shotguns for hunting in terms recreational use. Pistols, rifles and automatic weapons are far more restricted than in the US but not impossible to own if you can prove legitimate use (expect automatic weapons). So, if you are pest control specialist you may be permitted a rifle. A pistol may be possible under very restricted circumstances. Automatic weapons are severely restricted and pretty much impossible to use outside of the armed forces or police.
I know several brothers with guns. Most of them are air rifles which they use for rabbits but a handful I now have shotguns which are used for hunting birds or even deer. I know many, including myself on several occassions, that have gone and participated in clay shooting. That is perfectly acceptable.
Very few brothers hunt for game birds or deer. Whilst that type of hunting is possible and not unpopular we are not like scandinavia or north america where game hunting is far more accessible. It's simply not common amongst witnesses here for a number of reasons.
Most of the time if you were to find a brother with a gun it would be an air rifle and he would own some land in a rural area. He would also likely keep it fairly quiet. Air rifle ownership amongst witnesses in urban, sub-urban or even rural areas if they have no land is very, very low.
Gun ownership for personal protection is not legal here so is never an issue amongst the witnesses. It does skew their thinking and acceptance of gun ownership for hunting however.
