So we did, for the second week in a row, a family BIBLE-ONLY study.

    Interesting highlights:

I am reading from the 1984 Bible with References. My mom and dad decide to read from revision 2013. After reading the first three verses of Titus 1, my mom says, "why don't you read from the new Bible?"

me: "uh... no... I prefer the reference one"...

    mom: "ok"

    I continue reading,

(Titus 1:11) 11 It is necessary to shut the mouths of these, as these very men keep on subverting entire households by teaching things they ought not for the sake of dishonest gain.

I comment on how scientologist's founder was reported to have said, "I want to make a million dollars! I will make a religion"...

My mom just shook her head...

    (Titus 3:9-10) 9 But shun foolish questionings and genealogies and strife and fights over the Law, for they are unprofitable and futile. 10 As for a man that promotes a sect, reject him after a first and a second admonition;

This is where it got funny... I said, so there are some religions that say stupid things, like for example, ACTUALLY PREDICTING A DATE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD...

And my mom said, "yeah, like those brothers who thought... that... 1977... was the end of the world..."

    I was like,

me: "I think you mean 1975"

mom: "Yeah, that's it... the brothers had weird ideas, and lots of them left the organization because of that"....

    I said,

"Yeah, well... I meant more like those who believed in..."

mom: "Yeah... those who believed that last year was the end of the world"

me: "Yeah!! I mean, HOW STUPID IS IT to have A ROCK tell them WHEN the end of the world is!! Like, measurements and stuff OF A ROCK!!"

My mom looked at me funny... I think she kind of got a hint that I was mocking the Witnesses, but just kept silent...

me again: "Well... THOSE people are condemned in the Bible"...

So yeah... that was a bit of our family Bible Study...

What you're trying will never work.

Dear biometrics....NEVER say never....... You can NEVER tell what might spark a flame of dissent, curiosity or rebellion.

Dear ILTTATT.... keep on keepin' on....... You can NEVER tell what might spark a flame of dissent, curiosity or rebellion.

By insisting on a 'Bible only' study with someone who doesn't know WT history & doctrines, you are cutting your right arm off. They can pretend the WT said whatever they want to pretend it said and blame the consequences on whoever they want to blame them on, and then tell you to call the dogs off when you've broken your own rule and pull out a WT ragazine to demonstrate they are out of order.

You need them to explain to you the results of searching the WT CD for 'selling homes short time remaining'..... using a Bible.

You need them explaining to you a lot of crap the WT teaches ..... using a Bible. Choose what you want them to explain carefully, and then control the subject so that they can't sneak out the back door without confronting the issue that you raised.

Thats where you need to carefully push the boundarys a bit . Ask a few more questions .What brothers had weird ideas , who were they, and why did so many take notice of what they said.?

Of course trying to get her to acknowledge that it was the society that hyped up the expectation of 1975 being the end of 6000 years since adams creation , and it was an opportune time for Christs 1000 year reign to begin , so shouldnt the society take responsability for that ?

Remember also that the society beleived and taught that a creative day was 7000 years long.

Good luck to you ILTTATT , your hearts in the right place

HI ILoveTTATT, Your Bible study with your mother sounds promising since she brought up a failed prophecy. Next time you might ask your mother who those brothers were, what happened to those discredited brothers, and/or ask her if she has researched other brothers making similar mistakes without mentioning 1878, 1914, and 1925. You might even suggest that she uses google or wikipedia to help her do research. She might discover that the WTBTS continued to revere those brothers (i.e., Russell, Rutheford, Freddie Franz).

Please continue to post your Bible study experiences with your mother. I would be curious to read about any comments she might have about 2 Cor 3.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

Well man, you know your old lady and what she can tolerate so all power to you. But be sparing with the "object" lessons by drawing her out more. Otherwise she'll soon smell out your sermonettes. BTW, the epistles lay the groundwork for shunning - Paul, from the jewish background, knew how to summon the act of abruptly avoiding certain ones. Pray and hope your old lady doesn't find her acceptance of the Watchtower's legalistic bent increasing. That sword you are trying to weld, is two-edged. I'd hate to see your dear Mom put you in the hot seat. When momma's not happy, ain't nobody happy.

Keep it going ILT, well done. I have to admit though I use the publications to expose the wrong with my loved ones. It has seemed to have worked in some cases.

Nice to hear how family study is going. We read an article about shunning from jwsurvey in our fam study this week

Just keep using the Bible to make comparisons with what the GB's literature claims is truth.

I did this yesterday, when I visited a lovely brother (recently resigned as an elder) and his wife.

I explained about the the GB'S ongoing myth about "new scrolls" - they are not new, they are not wonderful new teachings, and they do not get opened during the 1000 year reign, they are opened after Satan is destroyed!

When I said these things, the sister picked up her Bible and read Revelation 20:1-12 and discovered the truth!

The brother then asked if I'd written to the Org to point out these wrong ideas. I said that the GB and the Writing Committee know very well what those Scriptures say, and I'm not going to make myself the subject of a witch-hunt by alerting the "masters of our faith" to the fact that I may be sharing truth with others in the cong!

Hey, it's a start. Maybe she will awaken. Keep up the good work.
