In particular the belief that the soul does die at death, (its not eternally tormented) belief in a paradise hope and other similar doctrines of the WTS.

I'm curious as to just how unique the WTS is. They claim to be the only ones with their particular set of beliefs but its something that I never really researched all the years that I've been a JW.

Yes there are to name one 'The Christadephians' I hope I spelt it right
We have some friends just up the road that have grown up in this cult.
Funny thing is that they argue with JW at the door to!
They don't believe in serving in the millitary or police force or vote ect... but her husband works for the government and their willing to use the police when it serves them. Getting late! FOR ME.
They believe in paradise here on earth and no hell and soul sleep ect... look them up on the web.

I remember hearing something about a Jim Jones that had a group in, I think, Central America or something. They are very similar, but I haven't heard anything about them in a long time.

Barry can tell you more, but don't the Seventh-Day adventists believe the same thing?

Aren't they the ones that Russell stole this belief system from?

Strangely enough I had a co-worker who was Orthadox Jewish explain his religion. Mainly because I don't get this "we hate Jews" mentality. They don't celebrate any of the holidays, including birthdays and such. They believe Jesus is Gods son and that he was the Messiah. Now he could have been pulling my groin but I do know that there are many different styles of Judahism.

Dear Lord, please save me from your followers.

The 'Bible Students' still exist - a group that broke off from the now-JWs when Russel died.

I understand their beliefs are very similar - they don't have the 'modern' changes, though, I think - ban on blood transfusions, use of stake instead of cross, etc.

gxs - I have three very good friends who are of Jewish faith. This guy doesn't sound like the Jews I know.

They celebrate birthdays as well as a number of Jewish festivals. They don't celebrate Christmas but do celebrate Hanakah, and they believe Jesus was a great teacher, but not the son of God or their messaih. They're still waiting for the messiah to come. Basically, they believe and follow the rules of the old testament (ie: dietary restrictions, festivals, etc.)

He must have been a different style of Judaism that I've never heard of.

Actually there are lots of churches that believe similar things. My mom was a catholic and taught me a number of things contrary to the Catholics but in line with the witnesses. Just demonstrating that individual christians often have their own concepts.

GSX that dude had to be totally pulling your legs. Or he might have been Messianic Jew, which really isnt considered jewish by the other four main groups, Orthodox, Conservative, Hasidic, or Reformed. Though reformed jews are a bit more lax with who is and who is not a jew. But Jews, except messianic, do not believe Jesus is the messiah.

Let's see, three wives, seven concubines, nine slave girls, and twenty-seven black nazi female body guards. I've only got forty-five women to go and my cult is complete
