My dad didn't step down he was df'd. I knew of others who stepped down but I was no longer associated with them at the time so I don't know how or why they did it.
I know an elder from my latest cong. who stepped down after his wife divorced him and was disfellowshiped for it. He was asked to reconsider. He said he did not feel he could continue as an elder under the circumstances and they left him alone. He continued as a regular publisher from then on.
Don't have any other personal expierences other then that.
My husband is stepping down tomorrow night . . .

When I stepped down, it was like a heavy load was lifted off my shoulders. With no responsibilities, I could do as I wanted.
However, let it be known that the elders will no doubt be watching him with suspicion.
