The bible says they are to be innocent as pidgeons and cautious as snakes. One thing about snakes is that they are very flexible. The elders could have let go of some of their rigidity, and suggested a painless solution. The innocent lie that i suggested above would have avoided a lot of harm for this lady trying to clean up her life. Christians are supposed to be above the 'letter of the law'.
