I took a lesson in French and Italian before going on a trip. The Italian helped a little, as it was similar to Spanish, which I knew a little. The only thing I understood in France was "petite dejuener" (breakfast).

Knowing a little Spanish is hampering my French -- I keep trying to pronounce things as if the words were Spanish. There are loads of youtube videos on learning French, so I try to listen to at least one a day in addition to the Pimsleur, just for the pronunciation.
