Will The Governing Body Tighten Control Over Rank & File Members Even If It Opens Them Up To More Lawsuits?

When we look at the Conti case we see the amount of control that the Governing Body has over the rank and file makes them open to lawsuits. I see lots of areas where this can work against the financial and legal interest of the Corporation, for example:

    1. A banning of blood transfussions enforced by disfellowshipping

    2. Interfearence with a countries right to defend itself:

Among those who have been charged with offenses under the Act are German-American socialist congressman and newspaper editor Victor Berger, former Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society president Joseph Franklin Rutherford, communists Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Pentagon PaperswhistleblowerDaniel Ellsberg, and alleged cablegate whistleblower Bradley Manning. Rutherford's conviction was overturned on appeal. [ 2 ] The most controversial sections of the Act, including the original section 3, under which Rutherford was convicted, were

    3. Enforced shunning

    4.etc....

Frankiespeakin – “Will the governing body tighten control over rank and file members even if it opens them up to more lawsuits?”

    Absolutely; they’re already doing it.

The rhetoric coming from Brooklyn (particularly last October’s "we will determine who is or is not a sexual predator" memo) is indicating that GB2.0 is indicative enough; and why should we be surprised? They’re an authoritarian high control group, and that’s really the only response an organization like that can and will ever take…

…and yes, I do think this will result in more lawsuits.

    There’s another possibility, too, though…

Remember the fruits of Barb Anderson’s internal efforts back in the 90s to affect internal reform? Sure, it seemed like a breath of fresh air for victims, but the WTS was caught completely off guard by the number of victims coming forward, thinking they’d finally see justice. In fact, I suspect the alleged "secret WT pedophile database" we’ve all heard about is probably the result of that era (although - assuming it does exist - I figure it probably started out simply as records of JC meetings, but due the sheer volume of sex-offense-related entries, it essentially evolved into its present form).

They peeled back the lid before, and I highly doubt they'd ever want to experience that again…

…so maybe the real question that should be asked is this:

Which course of action will cause more lawsuits to be filed against the WTS?
    A) cracking down on the R&F (and hopefully intimidating enough of them into submission), or
    B) easing up on restrictions and opening “Pandora’s Box” again?

If I had to guess, I’d say that the Legal Dept. crunched the numbers and concluded that the latter would probably cost the WTS more.

After all, it’s nothing other corporations haven’t done before; we’ve all heard stories about automotive companies that gauge the costs of potential lawsuits over a given vehicle’s design flaw versus the costs of recalling the vehicle or having the flaw corrected, and deciding that allowing the flaw to remain unresolved is less expensive in the long run.

Why would the WTS conduct business any differently?

I hope that the WTBTS tightens its grip on R&F JWs a lot more - to the extreme if possible!

It seems that more JWs awaken the more that the WTBTS tightens its grip on R&F JWs. I'm sorry that people will feel hurt by this tightening of control. A lot of pain in the short-term for a lot more happiness in the long-term is better than a little pain for the rest of a JW's life with no gain and less happiness.

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

I don’t believe the Governing Body is in control of the WTS anymore. The Service and Legal Departments have assumed that role with the Governing Body simply following their edicts. After all, the real brains behind this outfit prefer to operate behind the scenes, not in the open where their actions can be scrutinized, studied and accounted for. While the names of the Governing Body members are public knowledge, those who head these departments are unknown. It’s the old game of being the power behind the throne, operating in complete safety and impunity.

    BINGO Quendi !!!

Over a decade ago the GB and the leaders of the WT Society (corporations) officially parted ways. The GB is the theological figurehead.

This question again raises its nasty head : Is the dog wagging the tail...or is the tail wagging the dog?

Like all business entities, friction always exists between the sales department and manufacturing. The WTBTS is no different. It's my guess that things aren't too happy at headquarters right now...

seems the GB was promoted to a level of incompetancy.

Has anybody here considered this (2nd page, 5th entry down)?

Historically, authoritarian regimes have almost always been incompetant; it's practically a defining characteristic.
