    Job 38:32

can you direct the sequence of the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens. - NLT

can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with it's cubs - NIV

God challenges Job's ingnorance. from the biblehub.com translation.

There are a few different translations, which leads one to ask, how can one trust the translations as being correct, so one needs to seek out a resource which has a reputation for as 'correct' as translation as possible.

The whole chapter of Job 38, is talking about nature, and how the earth is set, ond how evrything works in harmony.

    Seasons, cycles, animals, life etc.

www.sacredtexts.com - looks like a good one for giving explanation and discussion on these things.

just look at the jewish holidays, they all lie on the solstices and equinoxes. xian has xmas and guess what judaism also has a festival of the lights (Hannukah) on the same day for the same reason to be happy that the sun is born and the days are lengthning.

Hanukkah ( / ' h ?? n ? k ? / hah-n?-k? ; Hebrew : ???????? , Tiberian: ?anukkah , usually spelled ????? , pronounced [χanu'ka] in Modern Hebrew ; a transliteration also romanized as Chanukah , Chanukkah or Chanuka ), also known as the Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication , is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple ) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Greeks of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar , which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar .

    [ ... ]

The dates of Hanukkah are determined by the Hebrew calendar. Hanukkah begins at the 25th day of Kislev and concludes on the 2nd or 3rd day of Tevet (Kislev can have 29 or 30 days). The Jewish day begins at sunset, whereas the Gregorian calendar begins the day at midnight. Hanukkah begins on sunset of the date listed.

    Ann:

Firstly the Jewish calendar is lunar and ours is more accurate and solar hence the holidays float about.

However lets just examine a few of them and notice they are all related to the seasons.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_atonement

Yom Kippur falls each year on the 10th day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, which is 9 days after the first day of Rosh Hashanah. In terms of the Gregorian calendar, the earliest date on which Yom Kippur can fall is September 14, as happened in 1899 and will happen again in 2013. The latest Yom Kippur can occur relative to the Gregorian dates is on October 14, as happened in 1967 and will happen again in 2043. After 2089, the differences between the Hebrew calendar and the Gregorian calendar will result in Yom Kippur falling no earlier than September 15. [18] Gregorian calendar dates for upcoming Yom Kippur holidays are:

    • 2013 – Saturday 14 September
    • 2014 – Saturday 4 October

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shavuot

Besides its significance as the day on which the Torah was revealed by God to the Israelite nation at Mount Sinai (which includes the Ten Commandments ), Shavuot is also connected to the season of the grain harvest in Israel . In ancient times, the grain harvest lasted seven weeks and was a season of gladness ( Jer. 5:24 , Deut. 16:9-11 , Isa. 9:2 ). It began with the harvesting of the barley during Passover and ended with the harvesting of the wheat at Shavuot.

The Jewish weak is 7 days for the same reason the pagans was 7, one day was given to each of the heavenly bodies, sun, moon and visible planets.

Agreed, but the ancients thought that the constellations had magic powers and controlled the forces of nature of earth. This is what the author of job is saying.

Job also mentions orion and mazzaroth = zodiac. its there in plain english.

    Thank you mp

So, in a nutshell, would be considered pagan?

    mP:

Is that a question of statement ?

    lost:

I began to think on the zodiac etc recently, when I read a bit about the Chinese Years.

year of the rooster, dragon etc, and I had an ooh moment, lol.

    mP:

Not all zodiacs had exactly the same animals but the general idea behind the cycles and seasons is there. Even the four animals assigned to the gospels, or the four creatures in ezekiel are the main signs of the zodiac, one for the middle of each season.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Living_Creatures

The animals associated with the Christian tetramorph originate in the Babylonian symbols of the four fixed signs of the zodiac: the ox representing Taurus; the lion representing Leo; the eagle representing Scorpio; the man or angel representingAquarius. [2] In Western astrology the four symbols are associated with the elements of, respectively Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. The creatures of the Christian tetramorph were also common in Egyptian, Greek, and Assyrian mythology. The early Christians adopted this symbolism and adapted it for the four Evangelists [3] as the tetramorph, which first appears in Christian art in the 5th century. [4]

The elements of the Christian tetramorph first appear in the vision of Ezekiel, who describes the four creatures as they appear to him in his book:

As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. [5]

They are described later in the Apocalypse of the Revelation of John: ”And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.” [6]

    Not quite.

Yes quite. JWs are warned against astrology, not astronomy.

    mP;

JWs are hypocrits, as i have pointed in various posts in this thread, its very evident that numerous writers in the OT believed in astrology. Josephus tells us there was a zodiac wheel in the temple of Solomon, and the 12 ttribes are the equivalent to the 12 zodiac signs.

ee Exodus 39:9-14: "...they made the breastplate... And they set in it four rows of stones... And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve...according to the twelve tribes."

As Josephus says (Antiquities, 3.8 ): "And for the twelve stones, whether we understand by them the months or whether we understand the like number of the signs of that circle which the Greeks call the zodiac, we shall not be mistaken in their meaning." (Josephus, 75.)

Earlier than Josephus, Philo ("On the Life of Moses," 12) had made the same comments regarding Moses: "Then the twelve stones on the breast, which are not like one another in colour, and which are divided into four rows of three stones in each, what else can they be emblems of, except of the circle of the zodiac?" (Philo, 99.)

Feel free to lookup those books if you wish.

    mP:

They can pretend whatever they like but the dates all match the pagan festivals. The same thing happened when xianity adopted xmas as jesus birth. The reasoning behind remains the same. The sun is born in the winter solstices and starts to get stronger. Jesus is born and also comes to save the world. Jesus himself said it best, with phrases like he comes in the clouds, he is the light of the world, walks on water. Read all the supernatural references about jesus and replace a man with the sun and they are a perfect fit.

Take for instance nisan 14. There are at least 7 major events that occured on this day. im not saying believe the site below, but the scriptures they give do show us that all these events happened on nisan 14.

Its obvious the pseudo events have been shaped to always fall on nisan 14. The stories would work just as well regardless of the day or month.
