Las Malvinas: You are SO right.

Those who wish to know what the man was really like (and read Spanish) might want to check Enrique Krauze's "El poder y el delirio" (Power and Delirium). Chávez was an extremely narcissistic man who was clever to occupy the place of a Messiah Latin Americans crave for. But a squanderer of immense wealth he was, and an autocrat as well. The sad thing is that his death will make him a saint.

I think he was one of the better ones. Smart enough not to go overboard with his leadership, knew when he was defeated during the several attempts to overthrow his leadership so he kept his head and returning to power, he was popular after all.

The US media always painted a bad picture because his politics don't align with the oligarchy we have but he was someone who his people could count on. He was a good leader for the people, off course not so good for the companies that bribe our government officials and that's why the US media (and the brainless that believe them) doesn't like him.

I agree, Satanus. The man did some good things too. Unfortunately, in our society, many tend to focus on the negatives instead of taking the positives that the person also did into account. Of course there have been some inherently evil people to walk this Earth in the past, but I don't think that Mr. Chavez was one of those people, and as such, I personally wish him a peaceful rest.

He has made Venezuela unfit for human habitation and ruined a country I love. My wife and I won't buy a home there, which we would have liked to do, because there are no property rights. She is a Venezuelan citizen. If we leave the house or apartment empty while we are in the US, someone can simply take it. The government has actively encouraged people to do this. I've even had to hold back merely visiting so that the relatives can get to know my kids because the crime is so bad it is truly breathtaking. They'll be kidnapped. I haven't visited in over 5 years. There are more homicides in a year in Venezuela, with only 29 million people, than in the US, Canada and the EU put together, which exceeds 800 million people. It is now one of the most dangerous places in the world. In the meantime, Colombia next door has gone in precisely the opposite direction.

A beautiful country has been overrun with filth and scum since Chavez took over. It's bad enough that he was an autocrat with no respect for civil liberties, but at least he could have done something about the crime. Even Cuba is a safe place.

Interesting. When he wanted to be 'president for life' you knew the Castro complex had taken over.

Somebody told me that one pound of dry salted codfish costs about $40 U.S. dollars. Does anyone know if this is true?
