Why was Simon Peter armed with a sword and other followers of Jesus?

    I've long been facinated by the gradual movement of Christianity from a supposedly "persecuted" religious minority into the prime position of the "Official" religion of the Roman Empire...

    Since the Roman Emperors ruled by means of the Imperial Roman Army, it is most significant that the message of "peace" that 'jesus' initially taught, was gradually morphed into one of warfare as the New Testament books were crafted.

    And that the Roman Emperors eventually saw fit to make the 'enhanced' version of Christianity the "official" religion.

    Zid, i tend to think that it is a case of someone in power believing, but wanting the best of both worlds, and so changing the message of Christ bit by bit in order to have what they considered to be the best of both worlds. (not all at once, mind you, but over time...)

    Could also simply be a case of recognizing the power that could come with 'heading up' a religion in the name of Christ. But I would suspect the former, and then the latter also came into play.

    tec, someone "in power" eventually did "believe" - the Emperor Constantine's mother - around 300 years after 'jesus' allegedly existed. Then there was that meeting at Nicene which estabhished the books to be included in the OFFICIAL bible.

    By that time, the bible was being openly crafted in a Roman mold.

    However, one can see a gradual departure in the scriptures themselves - from the "Sermon on the Mount" to Revelation, the message gradually gets darker and more war-oriented - JUST the thing to appeal to a warrior nation that was allegedly "persecuting" Christians...
